I got married in a secular wedding chapel and had a reception in the private room of a beautiful Italian restaurant. I planned it all and put it all together all by myself, I made the reception decorations and set them up on my own. The first thing you need to do is plot a budget and see how much money you ultimately want to spend on the event. Then you need to decide what style you want it to be. Morning, afternoon, evening? Casual, formal, semi-formal? Next you can pick a theme, if you want one. I had a ocean theme, some have country themes, or seasonal themes (since your wedding is in May, a spring theme), or old Hollywood. The list goes on. However, themes are completely optional. Then you want to research the prices of things in your area. The word "wedding" often drives the prices up on just about anything, so you should be careful of being ripped off. Now as much as all this sounds, there is an added element of complication. Wedding dresses, invitations, ceremony venues and reception venues need to be picked and settled on ASAP. If you're going to buy a gown from a bridal store, they take about 4 months to make. Invitations take a couple months to make. Many venues also book up in advance so you'll want to get that out of the way sooner than later. But don't jump into anything, either, still follow the steps so costs and over planning don't spiral out of control.

Awe...Congratulations!! Wow! This is coming up fast. A spring wedding is such an awesome idea. I think the first thing I would do is seek out a pastor, and complete a couples counseling session. A lot of issues can be discussed that may not have been brought up during your dating relationship, such as having children, how long to wait, etc. Having a priest/pastor involved in the relationship would be a big help. I have always wanted a wedding outside. May is a perfect time for that. I'm not really sure what kind of ideas you are looking for, but I also know that my bridesmaids would be wearing a rainbow of colors :)
