Yesterdays Demonstrations in UK

Good Morning my lotters I am guessing many people have seen the pics of the two Royals who got caught up in yesterdays student protest about the increase in university fees from 3,000+- approx-9,000 after three years studying .they will have to start paying this huge debt back as soon as they start earning over 21,000. Now there are many people in the world who have to pay for ALL their education, and probably do not understand why there is such a fuss about paying fees for further education in the UK. I don't think it is so much about paying the fees, it's more about how much the fees will rise, the Uk has basically got a conservative government, even though it's supposedly a coalition government with The Liberal Democrats, the Liberal Democrat Leaders seem to be just rolling over and letting the Conservatives do exactly what they like, and, the conservatives are more likely to be more interested in those in the UK with money and power,so those who will be more likely in the future to stay on and go to university, are the young people from families who have money and can afford to support and pay for their childrens university fees, living expenses etc.Young people from poorer families obviously will not have this kind of financial support, and on the whole, will now be put off of going on to university. So university education goes back to how it used to be,available to those who can afford it,or the few who manage to get some kind of help. In other words university for the rich... Any way I am getting sidelined,my main point here is about the Liberal Democrats, who before the election said they would never agree to increasing university fees, but now that they are in Government have (bar a few )now changed their minds and said they are in agreement with such a large increase in university fees,(well done to those Lib/dems and conservatives who stood by their principals and voted with their conscience, and did not give into the leaders telling them which way they should vote..) I feel the Lib/Dems (not including the few who said no). Have let themselves down,so many believed Nick Clegg would be different from other political Leaders, that he would stand up for the ordinary Joe/josephine in the street, but it seems we were wrong,he is just another politician making sure he is alright. But what the Lib/dems have failed to realize is that the students out on the streets of London yesterday, are the voters who will be going out to the polls in four and a half years time, they will be paying back these large fees, and they will remember the broken promise made by Nick Clegg, and whereas most people know that the Conservatives take care of the wealthy, they expected the Lib/dems to be different,so they will be remembered by this young generation as the party that went back on their word on tuition fees, and will probably lose many seats, and may never taste what it's like to be in power again.. Now I am in no way condoning the violence of yesterday, or what happened to the two Royals, but why were vehicles of any description being driven through that area?I am not blaming the ordinary police person ,but someone higher up the command should have said no traffic of any kind should go through wherever that area was. The police had a very hard task to deal with yesterday,I for one would not have liked to have been in that situation, and they did a good job in very difficult circumstances. Hope I haven't whittered on to much. Have a great weekend. jojo732

I live in the United Kingdom in England. When I was in my mid twenties I went to university and got my fees paid for and a grant for living expenses. In my third year of studying I took out a student loan of £1,250 at a low interest. It didn't take me too long to pay that back. I became a primary school teacher and that is a graduate profession. It is shameful that students tuition fees will go up from around £3,000 a year to £9,000 a year. Then the student will leave university and go to a career. He or she will have a large debt of around £27,000 to £60,000 or maybe more. I was paying my student loan at £22 a month and then putting more money that I had to in order to pay it off. It wasn't a nice feeling of having a student loan hanging over me when I got my first teaching post. I have a fifteen year old son and he does very well at school. He is probably going to get very good exam results at age sixteen and age eighteen. I wonder if he will decide against going to university because of the expense that would stay with him for many years of his career. I am not surprised that there was a demonstration in London for the people that don't like the unfair student fees for university.
