Choosing Potato?

Okay, I feel this is a little stupid but last week, I went to purchase some sweet potato (japanese ones) from one of the shopping malls. I went back and tried to make sweet soup from it. I didn't noticed 2 out of 3 are actually spoilt already. So my question is how do you determine the potato is ok or not when you purchase them? Anything to look out for?

The best way for me is to press the sweet potato, a soft and not so firm spot with little black spots is an indication that it's not okay anymore. I also trust my instinct, if the sweet potato is not packed, I smell it, you have to train your self though, compare the smell of the two spoiled sweet potato with the good one and you will know what I mean, you can use that as a sample. I also buy my stuff in the market from vendors I know personally instead of in the mall so if all the above ways fail , I can return or exchange it anytime

Nice! Pressing? Cool :) Thank you for your advise. Actually it just on time as I am going to get some groceries in the morning (8 hours time) and have them cooked by lunch.

I always look them over real good. But that is about all you can do along with kinda squeezing them to see if they are too soft. Sometimes you can smell them too and that will let you know if they are starting to go bad. Other than that sometimes you just kinda get stuck!

hi nicregi sweet potatoes should be free of black discolorations on the skin and feel for any soft spots, do not buy if its not firm some small black marks can be cut off but if its soft do not take it. the best sweet potatoes are firm and free from any discoloration at all. they should be kept in the refrigerator and used soon for best tasting dishes. usually seeet potatoes do not spoil like that unless keep out in warm humid rooms like on kitchen counters or in pantries.do not keep them out of the refrigferator as they will spoil that way.

Hi. nicregi. I will know when I touch the potato skin and press on it. If I don't feel any loose spots or sunken areas, I will know that it is fresh. When it is rotten, it will look worn out and it will have dark dimple areas. And sometimes when I get home, I will be able to tell how fresh it is when I peel and slice it.

a nice potato is is somewhat hard not so soft. Spots also in the skin of the must be considered. if a potato has a black spots on it, maybe the potato is already near to rot due to fungus that ate it. Try to see if molds are present in the skin of potato, and if you can see molds then that potato is not already safe to eat.
