Introduction - Why is it important?

I have been a member of many online communities and have a habit of learning the system before going to the forums to introduce myself but someone told me it would be best to introduce yourself to the community upon joining as they would help you out in getting used to the system. What about you? Do you introduce yourself to the community as soon as you join or like me do you take your time around first? I'm asking this because I want to know whats the best way to integrate myself to an online community.
