What is Microsoft Windows 7 OEM ?

Today I read about OEM(Original Equipment Manufacture),but I can't understand fully.I got some basic information about OEM they are cheaper than retail editions. Friends
please tell me.
what is OEM and difference between retail and OEM versions ?

I bought an OEM version of Microsoft Office 2010 online and for me, the difference was that I did not receive a disc as such but was given a link instead where I downloaded the software. It was a legal download and I was given the registration key for the installation and I have it on my computer without any problem, in fact I put the software on a disc myself for future use.
