When it is time to get a new dog do you prefer to buy from a breeder or do you adopt one?

Adopt. Every time. There are so many poor dogs who need a loving home that adopting is the right way to go. Also the price of a dog from a breeder is a rip off on most cases

I agree with you. I myself would rather adopt then to pay breeders the large amount of money that they want for a dog.

I prefer to adopt a mixed breed dog since it is cheaper than buying from a breeder.

I feel the same way. There are too many dogs that are in pounds that needs homes instead of people getting rich.

I adopt a dog that needs a home, from a shelter, a friend, whatever. I have never gotten a dog from a breeder.

That is great. There are so many out there that needs a home. A lot of times you can get one that is house broke and trained some.

My family has always adopted from the pound. I think that there are too many dogs out there looking for a good home, to go through a breeder. The breeder's fees are high, and i sometimes feel that the breeding program is not the healthiest, in some cases.

I have seen some purebred dogs that have turned out mean due to the breeding of the wrong parents. We had a Beagle that turned out that way. Come to find out the father had some bad blood somewhere in his past.

It really depends on the situation, if I'm looking for a puppy I may think about buying from a breeder. However, I would very tediously check into the background of any breeder I thought about doing business with. There are far too many puppy mills out there to just buy from any breeder. I've seen first hand what puppy mills do to the poor animals they use for breeding purposes. Ive even rescued a few of them from shelters in the past, its never a pretty site. So please be careful when selecting a breeder to buy from. Rescues are always a good option, you'd be amazed at just how many pure breed dogs you can find in your local shelters. If your looking for a rescue animal a good place to start is petfinder they feature animals from all over the country.

Years ago I got a purebred with papers from the shelter. They can be found if a person is looking for a pure bred dog.

I wasn't able to find poodles at a rescue center. I was sure I wanted to get poodles. You see because of my allergies I needed a non-moulting bread of dog and the poodle was the most suitable to these. I wondered whether to get a standard, miniature or toy. I got a miniature poodle called Secret and I traveled to a breeder in Lancashire to get him. I bought him in 2004. Then in 2006 I got a miniature poodle called Magic from a breeder in Essex. I think there are many pet dogs in rescue centers and they all need a loving home. When it becomes time to get a new dog I will probably buy from a dog breeder if I don't manage to find a poodle at a rescue center.

Adoption is always best because there are sooo many dogs and puppies waiting for a home. Without our help they will be killed by the shelters. You can find almost any breed you want available and if you take a puppy you can be sure that it does not come with any unwanted baggage like former abuse or learned bad habits. You can check online with PetFinder.com if you are interested in a particular breed. Otherwise there are many shelters and rescues with available animals.

I fully agree with you. When I have time I volunteer at one of the shelters here in town. I wish I could give them all a home.

I would adopt one, because then you do a good deed, AND get a puppy at the same time! :)

For me, it depends on the pet i like. I am fine both ways but at times breeder would be better as those shops guys could be trying to cheat us off. Well, it is possible right? :)

One never knows for sure. I just hate to see the adoption centers overloaded with dogs.

Budget wise, I think adopting from somewhere like a dog pound is best because it's not expensive. If you're looking for a pup, they can also find you or reserve one for you just like what me and my fiancé did. We went to a dog pound funded by Dogs Trust and had us reserved a puppy. You just need to give a donation (usually a fixed amount). She may not be a full pedigree dog but she has been absolutely adorable and puppies are easy to train than adult dogs. We tried to find a "free to good home" dogs online and we've tried to find a pure breed one but it's a bit expensive and some people would charge you for transportation fee or they would over charge you for the dog itself. But it is up to you and if you can afford to buy from a breeder then I suggest you do background checks or ask if you can see the mom so you can verify if the puppy is a pure breed, if you're buying a puppy. Good luck!

Good tips here. Myself I would rather adopt one from a shelter. Like you said there are many to choose from.

Personally, I would go to a breeder, since if I was getting a new dog, I'd be researching to find the breed I thought was the right fit. If getting a specific breed isn't important to you, then rescuing a dog from a shelter seems like a great idea.
