“The Tourist” of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp Flops. Is it that bad?

Movie "The Tourist" - A movie directed by Oscar winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck “The Tourist” stars Johnny Depp as a math teacher from Wisconsin who went to Venice to get over a heartache. This is where he meets Angelina Jolie who is on a mission to divert authorities' attention on finding her boyfriend. She uses him to lead authorities to think that Depp is her “wanted” lover.

It's one of the unexpected bombs. With a budget of $100 million caused by working overseas in some of the most beautiful places coupled with the talent fees of two humongous stars the film's gross revenue is a mere $17 million. “The Tourist” of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp hadn't been a commercial nor a critical success. With no signs, even if pumped by personal appearances overseas of Jolie and Depp, of being salvaged “The Tourist” is bound to line up with Jolie's 2007 flop, “A Mighty Heart” and Depp's 2001 flop “From Hell”. Critics had been consistent in detecting what went wrong with “The Tourist”: the lack of chemistry between the two lead stars. Critics also panned Jolie's deliverance of a bored Elise Ward and Depp's interpretation of Mr. Frank's character when he becomes Mr. Calm when scenes would call for him to be scared out of his mind with all these people trying to kill him. His look of being a Euro-trash poster boy than a midwestern professor also didn't help. Attacking even the director's work a critic said, “If it's not going to be nonstop action, then the acting and dialogue need a little style and grace and kidding around.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDfS0HtzyOA&feature=fvst

I haven't seen this movie nor do I plan on it. It looks stupid and that's probably why it flopped. I am so sick of Angelina Jolie. It feels like she plays the same character in every movie she's in. I like actors that are more versatile.

you're quite correct in saying that angelina jolie seems to be always kicking butts. actually, that's what critics figured out what's wrong with her career then. she was always miscast. till they put her in lara croft. then everyone realized she's for the action-type films. angelina jolie can do drama and proof to that is an oscar for a drama, girl interrupted. however, people, prefer her in action films. those are her top grossers.

A film like this is never as bad as some reviews would have it. The worst movies are very low budget movies which are done by a few people who have an interest in making films.

Whoa. It just means that a formula of just adding 2 well-known actors in a movie shot overseas doesn't necessarily turn into a hit in hollywood. I haven't seen any of the trailers but I was interested enough to watch the film just to see what kind of chemistry the two stars have. But now I don't know, if it's really that bad I'd just look for something else to watch.

I suppose this goes to show that just because a movie has a big budget and big names doesn't mean that it'll be an instant hit. I was thinking about seeing this but now I'll just wait for the movie to come out on DVD or something before checking it out. So, the main cause for this flop is lack of chemistry between the two stars, right? That's very interesting. Oh well, even with this I don't think it'll do anything to either of their careers.

yup. i mean who can dent angelina's name? even with the husband-taking they said she did. and johnny depp is already johnny depp. it's all part of the trade so they say.

I actually was supposed to see this movie on Thursday night but when we got to the theater, it was actually sold out so we didn't have the opportunity to see it. That said, I thought after seeing that the sneak preview was sold out that the movie would be a huge success (although the fact that it was sold out could be due in part to the fact that Depp is a hometown hero here). So, I haven't seen the movie and can't tell you what went wrong with it. I can, however, tell you that it is a hit in my town.

you know the actors' names are just the ones that could owe to the bad acting but i think, in reality, it is the director's responsibility. he sees the takes and he has the vision unless, of course, the director really wants to see his movie go in how the actors are interpreting their characters. they say oscar winning directors sometimes have bad movies, so...it was just one $100 million mistake.

The trailers for this looked extremely boring, so I'm not surprised that this one is bombing. I think a lot of movie makers think putting big stars is enough for a movie, and they don't worry about getting a good script or making sure the actors give good performances. With the price of movie tickets nowadays, I'm not surprised consumers are demanding a little more than that!

since you mentioned the price of tickets i still wonder why people go to the cinemas. i mean i go because my husband pays. but that's just like if he has lots or excessive money and well, he doesn't view money like i do. i'd just wait for the sale of the cds or dvds. a beautiful movie doesn't know the words old or new. it's just a copy one has to have. so, yes, people would expect more from any movie. mere sexy and beautiful people won't do.

Hey I am planning to watch this movie. I'm glad you mention this one. I am just really curious what went wrong? I mean they are like two of the most recognizable and respectable actors and actresses. Is the movie not an action movie? because these two are action stars. They are born to jump of cliff and shoot people in the face so if this movie is drama or love story then that is the problem.

Not every movie made will be a huge success. Even the biggest actors in hollywood can have a failure. i'm sure the careers of Angelina Jolie and johnny depp will continue to thrive no matter how well or poor their movie does.
