Brand new to Facebook

I just joined Facebook (I know, welcome to the 21st century--my next goal, to learn how to text!
). Anyway, I have having trouble navigating it and figuring out the best way to use it. Is there a way to "chat" with certain people, or if you post something does it go out to the public for all to see? Is there a guide or something I can browse to learn how best to use Facebook and make the most out of its features? I have started freelance writing, and signed up primarily as a way to get my writing "out there" but I would like to use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and all that, too.

Welcome to Facebook-ing era :)
Well, I not sure how we can help out here but it is all about trying out new stuffs and try an error. Lately it has a new feature in profile which made us who used it also kinda lost.
Don't worry, just try now and then and you will slowly find your way.
