Does anyone own a hairless rat?

Binks my hairless rat - This is a photo of my second owned hairless rat. They are very loving and love to cuddle as they like the warmth that comes from their owner to keep them warm.

A new pet shop has opened in my town and I happened to stop in and found they had one little male hairless rat in a tank. I went to play with him and scooped him up out of the tank and he ran up my shoulder to under my hair by my neck to keep warm. That sold me on him...I find even though most people shudder at the mere word RAT...they most often do not give these little rodents the time of day except for snake food. But they are highly intelligent and loving and with little care and feeding they warm up to their owners. Once they learn their names they come to you when called and are willing to learn from you if given the chance. I had my first hairless from going to an exotic reptile show with my son who was really into reptiles (still is) While he goes for the cold and clammy I claim the warm and fuzzy little rodents. But once there I found hairless mice, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs. Occasionally you will see a hairless rat at a local petsmart, but seldom do you see any of these other rodents unless at a exotic show. My first hairless was a girl I named millie and she learned to romp on my crafting table. I always had a cup of tea around and when I would set the teacup down she would come stand on her hind legs and have her daily tea too. She was quite the little mischief. I hope to get my new baby boy hairless named Binks to respond to me as Millie did she lived for almost 3 years. So does anyone else have a rat story or own a hairless? Would love to hear your stories about your rodents!

I've had rats for years, but they've all been furry. I've never had a dumbo either. but I do think hairless rats are very cute. I have heard that they are more inclined to have health problems though. I hope your lovely beastie has a long and happy life.

Alice and Willow in the dressing gown - Alice and Willow having a cuddle in the dressing gown
I've got two girls. I tend to always keep a female pair. the new rat stage is so fun, getting to know their characters and seeing them experience new things. and they're so tiny when they're young. I've always found that the best way to get rats used to you is to keep them with you while wearing a dressing gown. if they are nervous then they can retreat to inside the sleeves, which make a safe feeling dark tunnel, but all the while they're surrounded by your smell, and they get to feel safe with you. these are my girls, Alice and Willow tucked up in the dressing gown, not very long after we got them, and looking very content.

How precious! Binks my hairless makes sure he stays close to Buddy my white and tan rat. They do some really fun stuff. I just had them out for a bit I am looking for a bigger cage for them the one was fine for one but now I have two. Although Binks is not growing fast. He may turn out to stay small. The heredity is so different in hairless than a regular rat. Thanks for the reply I am enjoying talking to you about our pet rats! Don't know to many people that dont cringe around them or cringe when you just say the word RAT LOL

Awww thanks Galena. yes the genetics on getting to breed down to a hairless rodent is really quite an ordeal to do. I have been fortunate that mine have been healthy and live out a normal adult life. How many rats do you have now? Mine are fairly new so they are learning to respond to me. So I am enjoying training them for now

Yes I am an animal lover of almost any animal except snakes, spiders and scorpions. Not sure how you can even call it love when you never know when you might get bit or stung by one. I have always loved the cute, furry and cuddly to the cold and clammy LOL

We've always had rats as I was growing up, and you're right, they really do make good pets, especially for kids! I've never had a hairless rat, but there were a few I got to work with at a zoo where I interned. They are cute! I have 3 mice now, but when they pass (knock on wood) I may like to get a hairless rat, or a gerbil.

Thanks for replying. Get a rat over a gerbil. Gerbils seem to be more hyper and really hard to tame down compared to rats. Might want to do a little research on them. I had a mouse when my children were smaller his name was Cowie cause he was black and white. He was awesome...my son Nick, 4 then would take off with him on his shoulder and sit almost all day with his fisher price castle, and his tonka trucks and just play with the mouse driving him around or letting him go down the shoots of his castle and then watching to see what hole he was coming out of LOL Cowie had a good life he lived to be 3 years old. We had a small mouse cage for him and when I was cooking he would come out of his cage sit on the counter and wait patiently for me to give him bits of food. He never came and took it on his own, he just learned that if he come and sat on the counter I was not working on he was sure to get a treat! We had a childrens Zoo at St Louis Zoo and they had hairless mole rats man they were ugly but Nick loved to watch them Guess you can tell we are animal lovers. Thanks for the reply!
