The "right" to serve in the US military.

I keep hearing special interest groups and people discussion their issues talk about some "right" to serve in the US Military. The fact is, there is no such right for anyone. The people who talk about such "rights" seem to think those rights only belong to specific people. However, they don't seem to respect the supposed "right" for anyone else. Some things disqualify people from serving all together, while other things are allowed, but disqualify people from specific areas of the military. If you are overweight, have certain disabilities or medical history, or are red/green colorblind, you can't join. If you are too young, too old, or have too many kids, you can't join. If you can't pass the physical training test by the end of basic training, you can't serve. If you gain weight beyond set limits, you can't continue to serve. So are the rights of people who fall under these conditions being violated? The answer is NO, because no one has the right to serve in the US military.. even people who are already serving.

ParaTed you are so right it is not a right to serve in the military. I am with you I am tired of hearing this.. I wish that these whine babies who have to say it is a right would put their efforts to use where it would make a difference. I have the utmost respect for the military however it is not a right to join it is a honor

Because "Rights" is a political buzzword and "victim=respect". Since the gay people who want to serve have been painted as "victims" then arguing that they have some kind of "right" to serve hits home. However, the "logic" doesn't wash because there is NO "right" to serve in the first place. It is a Red Herring and a Strawman argument.

I won't be back to this discussion. It is obvious to me that most people have no idea what rights are, and couldn't care less. Thank you for your participation! Looking forward to reading what you say in future discussion!
