I want a kitty. What can I do?

I really want to have a cat. Always wanted but my mum was adamant about them. She was adamant about dogs too, but my sister managed to bring one home)))) There were days when she threatend to toss it out and forget about him, but he always managed to get her favor again - even after eating all our wallpapers, making holes in new clothes and making half of our furniture useless. So I am thinking, it's the time to get a kitty. But, even if my mum will be ok, i am afraid what our dog will do to it. He isn't aggressive, but he likes to play. And he chases after everything that moves. will he hurt the little kitty? What do you do. I have heard a lot of people have cats and dogs together in the home. But how did you make it work?
