Hi all,
I need some great opinions about my latest problem... While I was pregnant I didn't lose a single hair. Now that my baby is 4 months old, and I'm still nursing... I've noticed that some of my hair are falling out like crazy! I have been doing a little research on line about the vitamin supplements. Walmart has this Biotin 1000 mcg vitamin, but some health store has it up to 5000 mcg. Im just not sure if it's safe for me to take. Has anyone talked to their doctor and tried this supplement? And how much mcg is the safest one to take... Your thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Actually, it is quite normal for a mother that has recently had a baby to experience hair loss because of the fact that there are significant hormone changes that occur in a woman's body after a baby is born. That said, you will notice that you are experiencing hair loss but most of the hair that you are losing is probably extra hair that you had grow during the pregnancy with your baby.

Yes I've noticed too when I had my first child I lost some hair and some noticed that my hair was thinning. It all grew back, but this time I am shedding like crazy. I don't want to suffer for a long time, when there are solutions to my imbalance hormone changes. But I am just glad that I am allowed to take the supplement, but most of all it won't hurt my baby...

Hi there mqluvly! Welcome to mylot!
I guess it's natural to have loss of hair to mothers who are nurturing babies. I for one experienced it,lots of my friends too. I did not consult my doctor about it because my parents said it's normal. So I did not take any medicine for it and I still have lots of hair now.
Happy mylotting!

I know that I wrote a discussion about this along time back when I weaned my son but I searched through the discussions and couldnt find it. I didnt want to take to much of my precious mylot time away while doing this lol. Anyway.. when you are pregnant your hair gets thicker and after the baby is born the hair falls out. Mine did not fall out until I weaned my son then my hair fell out the extra that I had gained while I was pregnant. With each of my children my hair also got a little straighter. When I was in high school I had ringlets now after two kids its just kind of loose spirals or waves.

For me it is not good if you take not recommended by the doctor maybe it is not feet in you and if you noticed that your hair is not falling again then why you don't stop it.

When a mother is nursing you're giving a lot of your own bodies nutrients to your baby. And if your body is lacking the vitamins you need to fuel yourself with the food and vitamins. Not everything has to be prescribed by the doctor. One thing I've noticed, my babies scalp was getting very dry and scaly, and I've read that it is part of not getting enough vitamin B to the milk that i'm producing.., Biotin is a vitamin B source and it is not toxic to your body. If your body does not need it, the body will just flush it like a water soluble. When the hormone changes the body will react, it is normal to lose hair, but this vitamin can prevent it from losing, as I have researched on it. It is very needed on my daily diet. Infact, I've noticed that our prenatal vitamins has biotin in it, biotin ranges from 30-600 mcg, from the different prenatal vitamins... So there's really nothing to worry about...
