I don't know where the french fry got it's name, but I like what Louievill says! I'd check the web if you really want to know, but I'm sure there are hundreds of different stories!

Yeah, some of the web sites can give a long detailed explanation that really boggles the mind! I don't see a news story doing an article on them...

Hey that's good to know. I never knew that story until you've mentioned. All i know is how to eat french fried but not the origin of it's name. Thanks for sharing that.

According to this article,in the 1840s, pomme frites ("fried potatoes") first appeared in Paris . Sadly, they don't know the name of the ingenious chef who first sliced the potato into long slender pieces and fried them. But they were immediately popular, and were sold on the streets of Paris by push-cart vendors.

I have a wild guess but in reality I do not really know where it got its name. Maybe from the French who loves to cook fried potatos

French fries are from Belgium. The story goes that fisherman in Maasmechelen and other nearby cities used to cut potatoes in small pieces and fry them (like they did with small fish). People liked the potatoes so much that it spread all over Belgium, esspecially in the French speaking region. There they called it potatoes baked in oil (pommes (de terre) frites). The name remained the same when it was served in French restaurants. But in the Dutch speaking region it changed into "frieten". And when it came to America they were called French fries because people taught they were French. My favorite is "steppegras" an invention of a cook in Limburg (Belgium): these are very small slices served with steak or other meat with a lot of sauce. Delicious!
