Whats the reason for joining brotherhood or fraternities?

I am wondering of can we get for joining brotherhood or fraternities. It is not easy to be a member of a brotherhood since their are some test that we will undergo before we become a member of them. This will test our willingness and of course its all about pain, I cant really imagine my butt being hit by a paddle for several times. That is the usual way of testing a novice in some of the brotherhood organization.My question is what's that for?Why are they joining, for them to have a lot of friends?To harm others?To be popular or what?Please share your opinions.

I don't know, too. I too was asking the other members that I know and I don't get the logic of wanting the pain just to join in that organization. I got tired of asking them. If they want that, then just let them. Anyways, that's a choice they made.

Thanks for your reply, I am just curious like you. I cant see the reason why they're joining such organization. I just hope that somebody here in mylot is a member of that organization and can share his opinion. I have never been in that kind of organization though I was invited several times during my teenage years.
