I honestly have never heard of that expression before, but I would guess....it would probably have something to do...with being with your one true love throughout a lifetime. Sounds like a romantic fairytale. All marriages should be as such.

The term "gilt cage" means that no matter how beautiful or perfect a cage may be, it is still a cage. However, I think viewing marriage as a cage is completely wrong.

Well, most people view marriage as this previous unattainable perfection in your life. Where in reality the majority of people who are in a marriage feel it's a cage. So, from the outside it's viewed as gold (precious & valuable) but once you're in it you feel as though it's a cage & you're trapped. That's my guess.
