What is the technique to earn from Affiliate Programs? How to promote them?

I was recently surfing and doing research on how to earn from affiliate programs. And found that there are too many affiliate programs who pay you to signup their programs. You need to promote their products,hosting or website and you get commission per basis. I thought i will create a website and then place all the affiliate programs from mutiple websites in one website itself and as members will signup i will earn commission. But the main problem is from where wil the customers come? If they come also they wont pay for a paid service than look for a free. Coz people mostly want to earn money not loose money. So any idea how to work with these affiliate programs. Any help will be greatfully appreciated. Thanks in advance
