hello mylotters, i was just wondering how people could drive in the snow. firstly, visibility must be very difficult. while looking at the videos, i find that there is not much of light on posts hence the roads cant be seen except for a vast tract of open space. i have never experienced being in the snow. but if you have some tips for me not to get stranded because i was driving badly in snow, do share please. may you all have a very happy new year ahead. ann

When driving in snow one must do everything slowly. especially when there is ice. stay a long way away from other cars and if you must brake do so very slowly. Once you skid protect yourself, you will have little or no control of your car.

Hi Ann. My experience in snow driving here n Australia is limited to the roads to ski resorts. It does not snow in many areas, so you pretty much have to purposely be going to the snow to drive in it. I have driven in snow a few times here. Each time I have rented chains that you put over your wheels. These allow you to grip the snow easily. The lines on the roads are also painted orange instead of the normal white so that they are visible through the snow. same with the posts on the side of the road. They are usually red and much longer than normal ones. I have also driven cars in the snow in the United States. There I was living in the snow for four months, so we had snow tyres on the cars there to give us grip in light snow. The snow ploughs trucks graded the roads regularly so that the snow never got too deep.

The most important thing that a person needs to remember when they are driving in the snow is that you really need to slow down with your driving. This is especially true when there is some snow on the road because there are going to be slick spots that are under the snow on the road. When it is snowing you also need to make sure that you are not too close to the cars that are in front of you because it will take more distance to come to a stop. If there are whiteout conditions, you are best to not even venture onto the roads at all.
