Obama Returns to End-of-Life Plan That Caused Stir
WASHINGTON — When a proposal to encourage end-of-life planning touched off a political storm over “death panels,” Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.
Under the new policy, outlined in a Medicare regulation, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end-of-life care, which may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment.
Congressional supporters of the new policy, though pleased, have kept quiet. They fear provoking another furor like the one in 2009 when Republicans seized on the idea of end-of-life counseling to argue that the Democrats’ bill would allow the government to cut off care for the critically ill.
While the new law does not mention advance care planning, the Obama administration has been able to achieve its policy goal through the regulation-writing process, a strategy that could become more prevalent in the next two years as the president deals with a strengthened Republican opposition in Congress.
Opponents said the Obama administration was bringing back a procedure that could be used to justify the premature withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from people with severe illnesses and disabilities.

What do you think of this new method for Obama and his crew to pull the plug on Grandma and Grandpa?

There is no need for this regulation from Obama. People put their wishes in their wills and attached documents.
They also sign DNR's or the wish to live on machines at every visit in the hospital.
I just wish the government would get out of our every day lives. We now have judges making laws, which is not their job. Their jobs are to interpret and enforce the laws, not make them.
We have the First Lady h#ll bent on telling us what we can eat and enforcing it by pushing Congress (through the President) to contain the amount of salt, types of fat, and amount of sugar we are allowed in foods. Of course, it's to get rid of our obese kiddies.
It would be much smarter if gym classes were put back in schools and if parents decided kiddies do not need cell phones, ipods, computers, etc., 24 hours a day. They should insist, just as my folks did, that kiddies go out and play. I wanted to stay inside and read every spare moment, but Mama tossed me out into the yard to run and play. She was always open to having kids come over to the house and we always had fun things to do like badminton, volleyball, and as kids we rode stick horses Mama made heads for out of old socks and mop handles she kept after the mop or broom was no longer useful.
As for this bill, like it or not, humans are living longer. It's obvious our law makers don't care for the idea. I wonder if they'll change their tunes when it comes their time for the lectures and nudges toward ending their pitiful lives? Oooops, I forgot, none of what they put into law for us applies to them.

This system seems so very typical of Obama and his bull headed approach to his own policies. We will be governed by a survival of the fittest law, which makes me wonder if maybe he is secretly supporting the Doomsday theories that abound.
The one thing I would question about this particular regulation is what are the provisions for terminally ill children? Do you really stop caring for a child just because they are terminally ill? If so I hate to think of the repercussions that there will be. End of life care is not always for the elderly, there are other age brackets affected too. In my opinion, end of life treatments should be the decision of the person facing the consequences. I would hate to have my life hanging on the decision of people I don't even know....what right do they have to decide my fate, I believe in God and the final decision is always his.

I echo your sentiments exactly..."I would hate to have my life hanging on the decision of people I don't even know....what right do they have to decide my fate,I believe in God and the final decision is always his."

Hiya heather,
I would have to agree with Dragon54 down there in the responses. It is out of anyone´s hands when it comes to those kind of situations sometimes.
It will also affect People of all ages and conditions not just the elderly. This will affect everyone.
If he does carry that through I don´t know what Doctors over there will think about that. But being Doctors they will do their very best as always to sustain life. That is all I can say on that.
Being a Doctor is a vocation and they will always try to save everyone´s life no matter what age or condition they have.
I don´t think that the President can control all of them I mean the Doctors themselves he would have a hard job going if he tried to.
Just hope that they will moderate that Law and come to their senses too.

I AM GRANDMA. Of course I oppose all the deceitful, illegal, and unconstitutional words, thoughts, deeds, and actions of the monstrous usurper.
I pray he will be removed to prison for treason before he creates more havoc and wreaks more harm on the still naive, foolish, and unsuspecting Americans who have no wisdom, understanding, or capacity for truth.
An illegal alien has usurped the WH and all he does is not just illegal and unconstitutional, but pure evil.
