HD Camcorder with high resolution feature or DLSR cam with HD video feature?

My sister wants a DSLR camera for her birthday and I need a high definition camcorder for my video projects. We don't have the budget to buy these two and since both features are added in either of the gadgets (nikon d5000, panasonic hdc) I need suggestions on what to buy and what is more convenient to use. Thanks!

A DSLR with video capabilities will give you much more professional looking videos than a camcorder. A DSLR will also give you much more artistic freedom for recording videos because you can use different lenses to achieve different visual results.
