Hypoallergenic cats?

I really love cats... but I have never had one because of my allergies. One of my daughters also has allergies but not as difficult as mine. My sister has two cats and I can be in her house because the cats basically live downstairs by their own choosing. Because I'm not in their immediate company, I have no reaction. But put a cat on my lap for any length of time and I will start to get all congested and my eyes burn and water, etc. I've read, researched and watched programs about supposedly hypoallergenic cats. Then, I also read that there are really no "guarantees" about a breed that someone with allergies can own and not expect a reaction. Sphynx cats and the Rex breeds (like Cornish Rex or Devon Rex) are often cited as good choices and I've been reading that Siberians are also good for those with allergies. If you have allergies and own a cat, I'd be interested to know what kind you have and what your experiences have been. A cat would be really welcome in my home -- but I don't want to go through the heartbreak of getting one and having to give it up. It would be selfish to put my desire for one above its best interests. I also don't want to have to go for regular shots to circumvent my allergies. Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! :)

I think I'll probably have to do that... problem is that I sometimes have to spend a fair amount of time with a cat before I start to react and then, once I do, it comes on like gangbusters. But I'm sure that any breeder wants to be sure that they are placing a cat in the right home, too.
