Do you believe adversity brings people together?

I just survived the fifth highest snowfall on record for New York City. I remembered early this morning how when i was young, I would go outside the morning after a heavy snowfall and help people dig out. Of course I'm getting a little old for that but i bundled up about 7am and braved the weather to see what I can do. I helped a couple of neighbors get their cars into the street and remembered the feeling of helping. I saw some youngsters with shovels walking around looking for work. I quess one can argue that they served a singular purpose. But I felt deep inside that those same youngster will most like do some kind of good deed before it is all over. According to news reporters, the city did not do so well with answering medical emergencies and plowing the side streets. My question is this. Is it even practical to expect the city services to address all the needs that arise from such a storm or should we look inside of ourselves to support each other in this time of God created adversity?

The unfortunate thing is that sometimes, the only time we bind together as a whole race of people is through difficult times and adversity. That is when true human spirit shines. When I say unfortunate is because it should not be that the only time that mankind lends a helping hand to our fellow mankind is through tribulations. We ought not look to government to tell us what to do..or for them to do. We all know what to do ourselves. That is what makes you see that man, that kid..pick up the shovel to help dig out a person's car stuck in the snow...That person..knowing that helping out someone will make them late, but he/she says...screw it, I'm gonna help out anyway. Sometimes, it is also through adversity that people could truly see any good from a person, under a different circumstance or any ordinary day.. you thought had no good in them. So, yes adversity does serve it's purpose. I would hope that we all see the day that we all don't have to keep on waiting for medical emergencies or blizzards to see the good in man. Life should never be so extreme.

There is no way for a city to predict when there is an unusual amount of snow storms. So I feel that yes as a community we definitely need to pull together and assist. I mean a community does not solely consist of what the city provides for it but what the members in the community contribute to it, after all they are the ones who live in it. After all there are so may communities and with storms of this nature how on earth an they get to all in a set amount of time. So as we do the same and bundle up extra and go out onto our block and help one another as well. I can't begin to tell you how many times my boyfriend and I sit in our living room and can hear some of the cars struggling in and out of their parking space. He and I immediately have bundled up and and gone out to help in any way that we can.

ptower- I'm sure you heard about our blizzard out here in Minnesota that dumped 20+ inches in the area that I reside in just west of the Twin Cities, so I know full well what y'all must be experiencing. I heard about the snow fall there on tonight's news and was just astonished, especially the poor people trapped with no heat or food on the subway! I think that in times like this people do come together and help, but it can be difficult. In this situation I think we can only expect people to try but I am not surprised that services are slower than normal. I would hope people would be understanding of such a predicament and take caution. The plows were out here hours after the snow storm hit but that didn't mean there were no accidents, or so forth. Things occur and we can only do the best we can. Namaste-Anora

When there are big problems in a city or country, we want our government (or city officers) to be prepared. But I think that we need to know that we have to help and give out a hand. It will do us more good that what it does to the people in need. This February my country suffered a big earthquake, the 5th biggest recorded in history. Although there are always the bad guys who do extra harm (they were caught) many people helped out in heroic ways. That made posible that we get united at a time where unity was needed. I do wish newspeople talked more about those kind of stories instead of just telling about the ugly part of humankind. It is not true that people only care about murders and blood stories. Our country was put in the eyes of all the world this year when some miners were trapped in a mine and then rescued. The capacity to bear those conditions of those men, the whole rescue, were teaching us all values to live with. Take care!

Hello friend, nice question. In my country, when the snow is too much, little villages or little cities stay the way they are, government is too busy to deal with the snow at the moment when the snow falls, so people help each other, usually, if they need something. This year in march we had a lot of snow here, even the television made news about that, because my home city has 30 villages around it and our mayor from the government had to clean the streets, but some days these people were without electricity, with so much snow on the streets, that even buses with products for the food stores couldn't reach the places. It's awful that way, if people can go to work, can't buy what they need from the store. I think that in such moment we see who of us are good people and who are selfish and live for themselves only. This are the precious moments when we can show each other that we are still people, who are here to help and support each other.

Believe it or not i say yes. If you look at history you will see that adversity will bring people together. Recent events on the Korean peninsula will show that some type of adversity will bring people together. After North Korea shelled South Korea you saw the world unit behind south Korea condemning the attack. Few years before that North Korea conducted a missile test that brought the world together to try to bring peace to the peninsula. September 11 brought the united states together, people in this country started to work together politically and brought national pride. We also had Vietnam war that bought people together to end the US participation in the war. WWII brought the US together and out of the great depression. If you look at history adversity brings at least the US people together and it seems like the world by nature needs adversity for people to come together and focus on a common goal and they're more evidence of that stand point if you look at US and world history.
