The thin line between Great and Sucks, in movies

I was watching the David Letterman show last night and Jerry Seinfeld was on. He was doing a monologue about things that are 'Great' and 'Sucks'. According to him, when people decide on things, there is no middle ground. It is always either great or it sucks.
I find this so true about movies. Notice that when you watch a movie, and then somebody asks you about it, your response is always either it was great, or it sucked. I just find it funny that although people are free to make varying opinions, we are almost always left to take sides between great and sucks.
How about you? Are you the same?
Or are you the special ones, that would have something to say about movies, that is neither great nor sucks?

I do tend to be dismissive of a movie that starts fine and then deteriorates; rather than say: "Oh that was good; then it went downhill", I'd probably sooner mutter something uncomplimentary! That said, I have been known to praise a movie I have strong reservations about. I am capable of entertaining contradictory opinions about certain movies, especially if they are entertaining. On the other hand, if a movie bores me, I tend not to be too positive about it; in fact I'd probably just bail out, and move on to another one, something you can do with an increasing number of available movies online. I watch dozens of movies, and often only finish the ones I enjoy. And pretty well eveyr movie I enjoy I'll find something good to say about it.

So I would call you a movie buff then, CarlHalling.
You must have seen a lot of good movies. I've been off from work this week, and I am catching up on movies. They tend to be expensive as I just borrow DVD's. It would be nice just to find it online though.
Thanks for dropping by.

I love watching movies I have to say. I belong to an online DVD club, and through them I can watch free movies online, as well as receiving unlimited single movies a month.

I am opinionated when it comes to movies. I don't immediately categorize a movie as "great" or "sucks." I am also not easily swayed by film reviews. I also appreciate a lot of things when it comes to movies. For me, it's not just the story or the actors in it. It's also about the scenes, the places where the movie was shot, the "in-there" feeling when watching the movie. If I felt afterwards that I was not transported to another place, then I categorize the movie as "so-so." :p

You're response reminds me of times when we happen to see movies made there. When we gather around with friends on weekends, sometimes we put in a movie. All the girls would really be into the actors, or even the story lines, but I would be watching all the background scenes. I would be excited if it showed places I've been to in the past. Maybe I'm just homesick!

I guess I'm special because I would say more than It sucks or it was great. If you ask about a film I like but I Know it has a surprise plot twist, then I woud say , it was a great film with a twist, I can't tell you more. Or... if you ask me about a film that I Hated, I will say , i didn't like this film because... But just say It sucks without explaining why I would never do.There are many films that were ok , I don't like nor hate.. And if someone asked me about them , I would tell them my feelings. And then I would add , they may like it!

If you told me a movie sucked I would ask why? So I automatically try to explain Why I didn't like a film. The hard part is to get a person to see a film without spoiling Any plot!

You're response right there makes you a better critic of movies than I am sarah. Maybe if the movie was really great then I would have lots of things to tell people about it, but if it wasn't that good, I wouldn't be able to say anything else, than 'it sucked'.

For me , I'd look at the storyline. If a great movie with a good storyline without special effects , then it's still an awesome one. But if there's special effects , kind of a lame storyline , then the movie defeats its purpose. Tron is a superb movie with great effects and although the storyline is simple , it's not as lame as some I've seen. So there's a balance there or some sort.

Speaking of Tron...
We've been planning to watch it on the weekend. From talking to people who have already seen it, they also say that the story line is not that great. But they say that the special effects is awesome.
So, I would reserve my judgement about this movie until I've seen it.

hi bounce I usually think a movie is great or semi great or
just so so or it is garbage so I guess Im one of the special
ones. I weigh the movie wih the novel if its taken from a novel.
With Stephen King's novels the ones that I liked were ones
that the helped write the screen version as he had total freedom with the director. but those in which he was not involved were not just sucking they were crap. In his good movies he plays a very small part and is only on for a few minutes.

King wrote and directed Maximum Overdrive which sucked and also convinced him o give up directing. The movie was remade for TV as Trucks which was a better version and ended more like a Stephen King story.

Oh I've seen movies where Stephen King plays a cameo role. It's very interesting as you usually just see him in a few scenes.
I guess when it comes to a Stephen King movie, we all have to be special ones, as most of his story lines really evoke emotions.
Thanks Hatley.
And thanks for the tip burrito88.

I'm the great gray area. I can think of many movies that are somewhere in between. They had moments that I liked, but in total weren't particularly memorable. The latest Harry Potter movie, for example. Too much wandering around the countryside not finding anything. But then the book was like that too...

I actually read book seven too! And I had the same impression when I was reading it. I was hoping that the movie would be a lot better. I was disappointed to see the same. And a lot of whining from supposedly the lead character. Ugh! i hope part two would be better.
Thanks dawn.

I have seen movies that I thought were neither great nor terrible. I have been disappointed by movies before but I didn't refer to them as "sucking" unless they undoubtfully did...lol...I would just say that they weren't what I was expecting or that I didn't think they were that great.

I think there's no middle ground.People just don't want to hurt someone's feelings by telling the truth. We use words like: that's not my kind of movie( it sucks),well, it's average(it sucks), it's a bit boring(it sucks). The truth is that you don't like it.The problem is that people take it personal when you say something bad about what they love. So, you just lie.

When it comes to movies I find that I am an all around type of person. I will either think it sucks and or is great but not until I view it in it's entirety and put forth my opinions as to whether it was okay, too long and or boring.
So maybe I am special but I cannot simply say it sucks and it is great without further input.

I fall into stating it was great or it sucked on SOME movies. Like, if the movie was amazing, I'll obviously say it was great or amazing and if it sucked, I'm not going to sugar coat it. But I have a tendency to say 'eh it was alright, nothing special.' about a lot of movies. Or I'll say that it wasn't the worst movie but it definitely was the best. Depending on who asked for the opinion, I'll tell them why I thought it was great, okay, or a terrible movie without giving away the story. I usually try to add more details because everyone has different opinions when it comes to how great or terrible a movie is.

I'm definitely not at all like that. I describe very few movies as great, and quite a few as OK (and I really mean OK). I'm a bit more straight forward with the movies that "suck", but still if I found any good points in them, I tend to say so. I'm not the kind of person to see things in black and white, I'm more like the scale of grays type. If I were to rate every movie I saw on a scale of 1 to 10, there'd hardly be any ones and tens, but plenty of fives.

It's great to know that you've got scales between 1 and 10. And that you can place a movie in between, as opposed to just saying it was great, or it sucked. I guess you're the type people can come up to and get straight opinion about a movie. Before they spend money on.
Thanks for the response Liliac26.

Sorry for the error. Did it twice (up there).
How's the new year going?
Hope it's better than the pre-Christmas mood.
