Hello world, My name is Hollywood. I'm a 23 year old female black american woman. I live in the projects of Washington, DC. For those who do not know what the projects is, it's basically worse than the ghetto. I have not lived here all my life. I was born and raised in the suburbs. I also lived on the uptown side of D.C., for a large part of my adolescent life. BUT THIS PARTICULAR NEIGHBORHOOD IS THE WORST PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!! It's not because of the scenery, because, it's truly beautiful around here. (they just don't take car of it!) Lots of trees, grass and hills, makes this place a little to green to be in the city. The worst part about this neighborhood is the PEOPLE. I've never met so many people satisfied with section 8 (goverment assistance) in my life. YES, I grew up around the "hood" lifestyle, but I have always had the mentallity that where I live doesn't determine who I am or who I am going to be. These women over here in Southeast DISQUST ME. They lay on their backs, have 10 children, 20 different baby fathers, get a check in the mail every month, pay 10 dollars for rent every month, and behave as though they worked for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These people do nothing but sit in their houses, smoke DRUGS, crack, or whatever their vice may be, and curse and spend our tax dollars on useless junk! They walk around this neighborhood, (and most of them barely go anywhere else) as if they are contributing to the community, or as if they are living a great life. THEY LOOK AT ME LIKE IM STUPID BECAUSE I WANNA WORK HARD, OR BECAUSE I WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL AND GET AN EDUCATION TO BETTER MYSELF THAT I MAY EXIT THIS SH*T HOLE! Most of them raise mischievious children who grow up to keep the cycle going. Just because I like to speak with proper english alot of them like to call me "white girl" or "proper girl". It kills me how content these people are! How can someone be SATISFIED with 400 dollars a MONTH!?! I made more than that in a week and I still wasn't content. Don't get me wrong, money is not everything. I just take PRIDE in earning it. I am proud of myself for being a strong, hard working, intelligent, BLACK woman. I look beyond what I see here. I know that I can live a more comfortabe, successful, healthier life! I can't phathom, sitting on my a** at the age of 23 unless there's a billion dollars in the bank! WHERE'S THE INTEGRITY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY????? WHERE ARE THE HARD WORKING PEOPLE THAT MY GRANDMOTHER LOOKED UP TO? Why did we trade businesses, degrees, civil rights, for Govermnent assistance, and violence? What did Martin Luther King (I know it's cliche to bring him into this) DIE FOR????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Further more the person that pisses me off the most is my boyfriend's mother. She is so PERFECT. She never does anything wrong. Everything is her children or her husbands fault. When my boyfriend first invited me to her house it was extremely junky! She blamed it on her husband. ONE MAN COULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT. There's more... She doesn't work, and she's proud of it. On the 1st she walks around the house counting her goverment rashion like she worked for it. She doesn't clean. She makes everyone else do it for her. She doesn't do anything for herself. She lays in bed and smoke ciggarettes and watch tv or sleep all day. If she isn't doing that she's next door at her disabled bestfriend's house smoking w**d all day long! She barely leaves the house and when she does she uses a walker that she doesn't really need!!!!!!!!!! The only reason she uses it is because she's convinced that if she does she will really become disabled and some how recieve a disability check! This lady is only 42 years old, and completely capable of working and taking care of herself and making the most out of her life. Yet, she chooses to be a dead beat. Then she disrespects me and does rude things to me because I take care of me and her son! Because I like to work and better myself. Because I changed her son, from a lazy low-life, hopeless human being... into a hard working, dreamer, who wants more in his life than this! Instead of saying "Thankyou, I like what your doing for him." she would rather brag about things that aren't even true! How much money she used to have, how big and beautiful her last house was and other bullsh*t that doesn't matter. I am not saying everyone is like her. I'm not saying everyone who recieves benefits from the government is lazy. I have met women in this very neighborhood, who work, go to school, drive their own vehicle, raise 3 kids and still recieve a check on the 1st too! To me they are the mothers that truly DESERVE the extra help. They are what this country is all about. I'm tired of seeing, young able bodied women, settle. I'm tired of them bragging on their free money like I'm supposed to be jealous, or like I desire to be like them. When there are disabled women, or older women, or hard working women with kids who could REALLY USE THAT MONEY. To all those lazy people: GET A DAY JOB! OR ATLEAST GET SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE ON YOUR MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M DONE, HOLLYWOOD

I am sure that the initial intent of government assistance was intended for those in need and or in need of help at certain times in their life. Unfortunately like so many other aspects in life people have a tendency to take advantage, and yet still have high expectations. I have never sought help from welfare, although I have been in need and it kills me to see some who do literally loath all day and won't even attempt to improve their situations. Ugh..

Well I truly commend you. You are in need yet you still chose to work hard instead. I like that!

It sure isn't and I have my moments, but I want to get back on my feet. I do not want to get accustomed to this New Found Life of mine.

Hopefully the deadbeats around you can and will keep you motivated until you are able to move to a better place. I have no doubt after reading your post that you will do better and that you probably won't be where you are for very long. Hang in there, your future is much brighter than your neighbors.

I'm sure the hard working class all agree with lowell! I have a neighbor just like you! She "hires" my autistic son to do some heavy gardening. She is a wonderful person who overcame the oppression of the south and is the Administrative Assistant for Catholic Charities! She is a wonderful person with much to offer humanity! More than I can say for most in this neighborhood! I'd be proud to call you friend!

Thankyou! You have no idea what that means to me!! I needed that assurance that I wasn't being prude or over judgemental. The fact that you all are being so supportive let's me know that everything will be okay. Thank you so much.

You should be proud of yourself for wanting better for your life. I just don't understand those people content to be on the dole either. I like to know that I earned what I have, not have it given to me. If I earn it, nobody can take it away from me. Well done for getting your boyfriend motivated too! I hate reading about these women on the take who keep popping out babies to increase their checks. Use part of your benefits to go get some free birth control. I think, if you can't support a child, you shouldn't have one. That is just my opinion though.

Let me tell you about lazy white trash! My brother-in-law is one, fathered one and is now shacked up with this miserable piece out in California. She has money. She bought this house in MN so my niece, on section 8, so she can get this great tax write off and the section 8 money. My mother-in-law thinks shes wonderful because she gets jewelry from her. They have the nerve to brag that they pay the utility bills for this girl. No they don't! The state of MN pays the utility bills. Augh!!!!!!!!!!!! I finally got the chance to tell "mom" the way it really is and she said she didn't like to talk about that! Augh!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the discussion! By the way I call these people "repeat offenders".
