I have two school going children of 13 and 10 years. While they started watching TV, they viewed only cartoon channels. Nobody was allowed to change channels without arguments or long persuasions. And on most evenings TV watching finally ended into a fight over the choice of the channel that is to be watched. Being annoyed by these troublesome routine, I decided to get rid of the TV and got my cable connection disconnected. And it happened almost six weeks back. Since then I am not watching TV. Sometimes I miss my favorite programs, however, for the sake of peace that is prevailing now, I think I am on the better side. What do you think, my friends here in mylot? Have you had similar experience? How did you tackle it? If you have to face the same problem what would you have done? I am curious to know. Wish you a very happy new year

I can understand why you got rid of the TV and cable subscription. I ditched my cable subscription about four years ago, cause I couldn't even afford paying the most basic cable rates, with our near $1000 monthly rent. Since then, we have moved to a much cheaper state and can live in affordable housing, so it's easy to afford cable now. Surprisingly, I haven't gotten around to replacing our cable. But, here's what I do for entertainment. I watch Netflix streaming movies online (about $10 monthly) as well as hulu online and various other free tv stations like abc.com, cbs.com, nbc.com and fox.com. They show all the tv shows. You can catch up on past seasons of TV shows if you subscribe to Netflix and then watch on your computer. Your kids won't even know that you are watching TV. Watching TV shows is not really the best use of a child's time, unless it's really restricted. We have the ROKU and my daughter tries to bully her way into watching cartoons all day (Saturdays and holidays, afternoons) and though that's OK on holidays, it's not OK for weekdays when she needs to be doing her homework and schoolwork. So, i limit what she watches to educational programming like science shows, National Geographic, etc. Of course, my daughter is just in first grade, so maybe she is more easily persuaded than your preteen children. Best of luck with the situation. Check out some of those free tv sources I mentioned. I think you will be very happy with them.

Happy new year and thanks for you well thought out response. You have found very good and affordable means. I will try the free TV channels you suggested first and then the paid subscriptions.

In our household, my grandfather is the master of the remote control He watches news programs and political talk shows all day long, on just two programs, so I reduced my cable subscription to a very cheap one, with a very limited selection of programs. I used to watch HBO and Cartoon Network all the time when I was living alone, but now television is almost out of my life, and that's a good thing. The only time we are all in agreement and watch television together, as a family, is when there's a football match on.

Same here rather bad. Sometimes I feel an urge to watch movies, discovery etc. but there is no way. You must be feeling like that. Let's wait if the situation changes. Best wishes for the Happy New Year

When my son was small, he used to choose the channels for him to watch. It was usually cartoon movies on TV. If we wanted to watch some other programs, he would not be happy, so we let him choose what he wanted to watch. Now he is a young man and he spends his time on his laptop. We don't have this problem any more. It is good to see kids grow up. Take care, arkadeb.

Hi ebucast, thanks for your response. Which one is better to you? Watching or not watching?

Amazing. How did you do that? 6 weeks? I can't handle that long... I think it is better if you make a schedule for everyone so everybody will be able to watch the shows they want.
