External USB hard disk not showing the files in it

Maxtor USB portable HDD - Maxtor external 250 GB portable hard disk.

A few months back I bought a Maxtor external portable USB hard disk to backup all my important files. From a few days Windows Explorer is showing the drive letter but failing to shwo the files and is stating that it is not formatted. There is no other copy of the files and they are very important to me. Can someone help me to recover the files? So many thanks in advance to you for your help and that would be the best gift to me in the new year. Wish you all happy new year

have you try booting in safe mode? have you try using other operating system? (linux, win7, etc)

No, i have neither tried the safe mode nor other operating systems. I will definitely give them a try and let you know the results. Thanks a lot for the suggestions to help me.
