Are you in favor of having your dog tied up all day?

January 1, 2011 1:16pm CST
Are you a dog owner who keeps his dog leashed all day. Or have you a cage that serves as his home? Or do you just let it loose all day inside the house? What is your opinion to this matter?

Many places here have laws against this. It is considered cruel treatment.

Where I live there is a law that came into affect last year. No one is to tie their dogs up for a long period of time. And if they do tie their dog up they have to be home. There is a fine if someone is reported to have a dog tied without supervision from the owner. So now if anyone who wants their dog outside all day will have to fense in their yard. I believe a dog in a caged kennel is ok too.

hello goodhunter, Having a dogs for a year as much as possible i don't want to tie them or put them in a cage becoz i believe they will feel that they are like a prisoner, i have this one dog we need to tie him up becoz he doesn't bark he just bite those people who accidentally step on him or make fun of him every time we tie him up he ended up trying to kill himself so what we do is we just take him home unleash him all day. It depends on dog's mood or attitude if you think that your dog is going to bite then tie him/her but make sure once in for awhile you will unleash your dog. :) But if you have a child at home or someone who doesn't know to take care a dog then it will be better to put your dog in a cage or to toe him/her have a nice day!

DOGS SHOULD NEVER BE TIED, PERIOD. There are so many options today. I know this may sound stupid, 20 years or so you didn't have this many choises.Outside pen, inside cage, dog sitter.

Maybe you can do that if you have limited space or if there are people where the dog would be a danger, but see to it that the leash is long enough for him to move or the cage is big enough to be comfortable and away from too much heat or cold exposure. Also walk the dog at least once or twice daily, again do it only as a last option

Ask yourself, would you like to be tied up all day? Would you like to be confined to a crate all day? If you were tied up all day would you get frustrated and start yelling for someone to come and get you? If you were crated where you could not use the restroom would you become frantic as your bladder became fuller and painful? There are proper ways and reasons to crate an animal. Sometimes it's for their own safety. Many dogs are happy to escape to their crate when they are feeling overwhelmed by to much activity but never should a crate be used just to keep a dog confined all day. People that crate or tie their dog for long periods of time or on a regular basis are basically lazy and should not own a dog. Before you do anything that may be harmful to your pet, ask yourself how you would react the the treatment you subject them to.

Our dogs have a fenced yard to run and play in. They're also loose when they come in the house. We don't crate them at night or when we're gone. I don't like keeping a dog on a leash or a chain all the time. They can't run and play like a dog should be able to do.

When you have a dog, he naturally wants to become part of the family and enjoy family life. Keeping him/her tied up with really mess with his health and temperament and is cruel. They used to tie up guard dogs around some horse-racing stables and this used to make him very agressive so that nobody would go near the horses. He was well fed but starved of the company of humans or other dogs. Only his handler could go near him. I feel it was cruel and is unnesccary as electronic alarms could have easily protected the horses. I think now that this is illegal here in the UK so it is not seen so much, which is a good job! _Derek

I have never kept a dog chained up all day... My dogs have no cages.. My dogs live in the house, just like I do.. and they go out and have free run of our big yard. I don't see the point in why people get dogs just to keep them tied up outside day and night 365 days a year.. I hear people say "For Protection"... well how is your dog going to protect you when it's chained in your yard? My dog sleeps by my bedside.. if someone broke in my dog would not be tied on a leash outside..."protecting me" it would be going after said bad guy in the house protecting a family that loves it and shows it..

Sometimes for security reasons, a dog will will have to be tied up outside. I don't think it is right to leave an animal to always be tied up. Animals need a chance to run and explore their world. it will make animals and owner happy.

i would tie up my dog if i dont have enough space to prevent it from messing in the neighborhood but if i own a wide space, i will unleash my dog and allow it to roam the whole day.

I tied my do who is mean to cats and little puppies. When he sees one, he'll chase it whatever the cost and kill it. I also want him to be safe from the dog catchers on patrol our place. But he is not tied up all day. Every night, I let him free in our garden and in our garage. Every weekends I'm bringing him for a walk. But for me I want my dog to be free the rest of his lives.

My puppies have the run of the house until I leave, then I crate them. They are on a dog-run outside because we don't have a fence, but they can still run the full length of the yard and I never leave them outside, they come in when they are ready by barking.

hi goodhunter no indeed I am not as that is cruelty to our pets.We let our dog out when necessary and other wise he was in the house most of the time. He was well behaved and not destructive at all. When we were home he could go out for awhile to get exercise and fresh air..I dislike having a dog tied up as its just not right at all. plain cruelty.

No, definitely not. If a dog is treated like that, it's going to either get really depressed or mean. My dog is allowed in the house and we have a good-sized, fenced yard that he can run around in.

Definitely not! I think a dog won't be happy like that, they need freedom like everyone else. So I would only tie a dog up for a very short period of time, to be honest.

Initially we left our dog in a crate during the day because she would go through all of the trash cans in the house if we did not. Now, though we just let her lay in the house all day because she is less aggressive now.

Mine is able to be inside and outside all day. I do not like the idea of dogs being tied up all the time not only do they not get enough exercise but they are very lonley
