Have you seen a change in coupons lately?

Have you? I mean, I don't get a paper anymore regularly but have the last few weeks gotten a sunday a time or two and look through the many coupons, and cut maybe 4-5 as that is all that is in there that I use. Either I don't use the item, or it is to expensive even with the coupon. It was bad enough that they went down in quality from years ago...used to be like $1.00 off an item...now it is 25cents off 3! No savings there! I have a few places online that I watch for coupons and the same is there...tons of coupons, but not many for what I need/use/want. What have you been seeing? Am I missing something?

I haven't gotten the paper since my husband and I moved about two years ago. However, I do have places that I look online for coupons and I have noticed that there aren't nearly as many that I want to use as there used to be. I think that a big part of the reason that this is the case for me is that I've gone to using mostly store brand items and there are very rarely coupons for those. However, I have discovered the coupons that you can load onto your Kroger Plus card and you can use those with a printed coupon and that does equal a lot of savings in that area.

Yeah, that is a problem too. I have done alot of store brands to. The name brands are still more expensive even with the coupons! I mean, 25 cents off 3 cans of something? The store or generic is still cheaper!

I have also noticed coupon values dropping. I try and use my coupons when the item is on sale because .50c off a $5.00 item is not much of a savings. And those $1.50 off when you buy 3 of any of these products is a drag too. I don't use all those items so I have to buy 3 of the same product. I also find the coupons distributed are always for the same product. I think it's Proctor & Gamble who give out the most coupons. I am always getting my laundry detergent, fabric softener, paper towels and toilet paper on sale WITH coupons. They are always $4.00 off at the store plus the coupon. Does that mean the company (manufacturer) is overpricing to begin with? If they can afford to put the product on sale so often (3-6 week cycles) then perhaps the product only costs the manufacturer two bucks. Why can I never find a coupon for my favourite jam? And why does the store never put it on sale? FYI, I used to work in the office of a retail chain and I know that the stores put the items on sale as per the direction of the distributor.

I know what you mean. I seldom find a coupon for something I really use or want. Nothing on peanut butter or the normal everyday stuff. Guess they know that if it is "every day stuff"...we'll buy it no matter the price, so why offer a coupon to encourage us to buy it!

I think maybe everyone should get together and have days when we don't buy certain "everyday" items. Like national no peanut butter day. If no one buys peanut butter for even one day it might send a strong message. Just pick 7 items so the same item comes up once a week and then see what happens. When we start seeing some results, pick 7 new items. Even if it's just a certain brand. Boycott Jiff and just buy Kraft. If something like this became nationally co ordinated, who knows? xoxo Cyne

I usually only get coupons from the Sunday newspaper, or through free samples that include a coupon. I've noticed that in the Sunday paper, fewer and fewer coupons are being offered. And generally now, I have to buy two of the item, and I get like 40 cents off even then. So I have to buy more, and yet I save less.

Exactly what I am talking about ambiepam. Coupons just aren't what they used to be and often, not even worth it. I don't get the paper anymore cause the gas to get the paper and the cost, and the only coupons I get that I need are about 2-3 bucks worth!

As a Canadian, I've never had the privilege of really good coupons. It's always been for me just a few cents off of an expensive item or the coupon is to get me to try some junk food. For years I've always heard of how Americans get coupons for things like meat and milk, but I've never seen anything like that. The coupons you get for meat here are on the package itself, and that's only because it's about to spoil anyway; who the heck wants that? I really would like to find some kind of help. Prices are getting to be so out of hand. I actually saw butter for more than six bucks a pound the other day. How the heck do these companies think they're gonna make any money if no one can afford to buy anything? xoxo Cyne

Your right there..and they will soon find out how they are NOT going to make money if they keep the prices up. Then add to that the price of gasoline to ship the products to the stores raises the price...they will soon find out cause people will stop buying them simply cause they can't afford them. Then they'll see!

That's why I don't bother getting the papers anymore. THere are 2-3 "phamplet" style of coupons "books" with a ton of coupons... I might use 2-3 coupons out of the bunch! I often wonder if many people do use them. THey are often even for the same things every week! Nothing new! And the "cents off" isn't much and hardly worth taking the time to do them. I miss the good old days of couponing!

We have started receiving more coupons now. I always get the Sunday paper(when it has the coupons in it) but we also receive the coupons in the mail on Wednesdays. I will agree that the coupons are not the same value that they use to offer. The cents off for 3 items or meager amounts off of more expensive items is insulting. I do still clip the coupons and try to match them with the best deals. Unfortunately for me I do not live near any stores that double or triple coupons. I know several people make out like bandits using this method but it does not work for me.

My problem is that in the sunday papers....seldom do I find a coupon for something I need or even just want! Most of the coupons are for things i have no use for or another brand is cheaper without a coupon to boot! And then the buy 3 get 10cent off...like you said...that is just insulting. Another brand is often cheaper with no coupon. Between all the new fangled cleaning supplies, pet food and baby stuff...that is half the coupons to start, none of which I need. But still...you are only allowed to use one coupon per item. Most coupons are 5cents off or less...I SELDOM see a dollar off coupon for things under $10. So where do these coupon people get the coupons that allow them to get the item for free? No one mentions that on the new show, and I have searched and searched all over the internet and can't find anything close! I just paid full price for toothpaste today cuase I couldn't find a single coupon of any value for toothpaste!

I have notice the shortage of coupons and when they have coupons you need to buy more than one item. Most of the time it does not help you save. If I know of somebody who will also uses the product I will take advantage. I had one coupon for buy 2 teas get 1 free. My aunt loves tea and I gave her our free tea. I also go online and get free coupons. I will sometimes go to the manufactures web site and see if there are coupons on there as well.

I do all that too. Today...after "doing all that" yesterday...I had to pay full price for 2 tube of toothpaste cause I couldn't find a single coupon anywhere! Yet these guys have enough coupons to buy 500 tube and get them for free!!!

Lots of good coupons until Christmas, then they dropped off. I noticed more in this last Sundays paper though. I prefer the coupons with cents off one item. I don't usually use the 50 cents off 3 items. In those cases it's cheaper to buy the store brand.

Just before the holidays I noticed the drop in them. Even online ones are mostly stuff I don't use or want. But I keep checking!

What I am noticing is tighter deadline on the date they expire. There are lots of generous coupons, but if you don't use them up in a few days or weeks, they are useless. I had one that was as good as cash for $20 at my favorite shoe store, but I have to use it by Jan 10. Unfortunately I am booked solid until the 12th. I hate to lose the $20 on the one hand, but on the other, to get that coupon I bought enough shoes to last a while. I really don't think I need any more.

I get those sometimes, and so far I have been lucky enough to be able to used them. Kind of like at Kohl's...$10 gift cash for every $50 you spend, but you have to spend the gift cash that following week only. So far I've been able to do that..especially just before Christmas...I bought myself much needed clothes and with the free cash, I went back the following week and got a lot of my christmas shopping done..for free! And of course the BOGO at the shoe store... my problem there is I often don't find anything I like! But I always look!

I have noticed a change. There are fewer coupons in my paper. But I have found some wonderful coupons online. Target had a bunch the other day. I was able to print them up, and I saved over $5! A friend of mine has contacted a couple of companies of products she uses. They actually sent her some coupons. I may have to try that.

I think that is what I am going to start to do too. I have been going to the web site of my favrite things but no coupons (Other than Olay) but I am thinking maybe if I ask for coupons I might get them...don't hurt or cost anything to try!

Your explaination is why I no longer worry about buying a newspaper or coupons. The people that do well with them have grocery stores with good doubling and trippling programs. We do not have that luxury here. The only store that doubles sets a limit to 5 coupons and you have to buy an additional $25 worth of items besides. Yes that's not hard to do, but I want my doubling w/o having to buy the additional $25 in items. So frustraiting.... So I just watch for printable coupons and sites that do match ups and hope to find a good deal or two that way would be my suggestion.

Doubling is a thing of the past too. Double those dollar off ones...I'll never forget doing that! Sure was a good feeling. My local grocery runs a double coupon deal for about a week about 4 times a year. Big deal. Online coupons are out there and I do do those, but again...so many of them are for things I don't use, need or can't afford even with the coupon! Getting them is the hard work, using them is easy!

I read a discussion yesterday where a member stated that for the New year there were going to add coupons just this once for the first Sunday. I do believe that with the economies drop especially last year it is there way of earning more by us not saving as before. I so agree, I use to be able zip through sites and find loads of coupons that I found useful, now I can surf and be flustered as I can spend two useless hours and not find any good ones for what I need. Sad.

I know. I have gone to specific products I like on search engines and gone to their web site looking for coupons, but now, they don't have them anymore like they used to. Although I will applaud Olay for their rebates. But that is the only site that has any that I have found. I guess they all think the recession is over, don't have to encourage people to buy their product anymore!
