How do you tell if your friends in myLot are online? / myLot

We start discussions, give each other opinions, yet I never know who else is online. Is there a feature in myLot that allows us to IM each other as well to start a private chat?

There is no way of telling who is online in MyLot. You can Private Message your friends but it is not an Instant Messaging system. The alternative would be to use a separate system of your choice and add your MyLot friends' IDs. If some use Yahoo and others MSN, then Trillian allows you to connect to multiple systems.

I keep my email open while I am on mylot, that way if someone makes a new post or responds to my post, I will be able to tell immediately if they are online.

We have the Private Messages which we can use with our friends whether they are online or not. You send a PM and they will respond later if they are not here now. You can go to a profile and under all the information on the left you can see 'last logged in...' and then you will have an idea of whether your friends are here or not. There is no other feature which lets us know immediately if others are online or not.
