Why Do American Stars Only Donate Overseas?

United States

I just watched a news story where "Bradgelina" just donated $2 mil to a wildlife reserve in Namibia for orphaned baboons.... this brings up a question that has been on my mind for the longest. Why is it that big stars in the US seem to cater to every other country in the world but their own? They donate their money to causes that we've never heard of, and are forever adopting kids from overseas to bring home. Do they not realize there are many causes to take up right on American Soil? Are they unaware that there are kids to be adopted in EVERY one of the 50 states? Here's a perfect example. When that hurricaine hit Haiti, all the stars banded together to make a telethon, so they could donate money to the cause. But just a few years prior, the same thing happened in Louisiana...where were the telethons then? It just makes me angry that these stars, who wouldn't be where they are today if it weren't for the American people, can always find a cause overseas to spend their money on, but you rarely hear of any star helping any causes right here where they found their stardom. Is it just me? Am I overreacting? Or should they be helping more in the US? Your thoughts MyLot.

It's because they aren't doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, they are doing it as a PR stunt, well not always of course, but typically. Perhaps it is also because people don't realize that there really are people struggling here in the U.S.. Personally, I agree with you. I think that we should help our own country before we help others. It's insane to think that we don't know what's going on in our own country, or our own neighborhoods for that matter. There are some famous people here who offer help here in the states, but those people are doing it because they care, not for PR and so people just don't hear about it as much. For example, my favorite record label did a drive for Christmas. It was really cool. You had to donate something new like winter clothes or toys worth at least five dollars, then they sent you a cd. I really wanted to do it, but unfortunately I didn't have enough money until it was too late. But since it was such a success this year, I'm thinking they will probably do something similar next year.

You know what, that is probably the case as well. You don't hear about stars doing anything for the United States, but its hard to believe that none of our stars do anything for the US. I truly believe that help should start at home. During the Haiti telethon (not that I had it to send lol) I refused to send one cent to them, and kept asking where is the telethon for New Orleans? People are STILL in FEMA trailers to this day!

I know this is besides the point, but I actually read that they are forcing people out of the FEMA trailers. The article made it sound like they are going about it in a not-so-nice manner too. I don't know where that article is or else I'd post it for you. Anyways, I get your point and I totally agree.

It is so sad that when a hurricane hit Louisiana the big stars in the USA didn't make a telethon. Yet they bothered to did that fund raising when a hurricane hit Haiti. In Africa especially there are children these big stars go and adopt. There are poor communities the American big stars want to help like Angelina giving two million dollars to a wildlife reserve in Namibia. In every state of America there are children that need adopting. Yet the stars don't want to adopt a needy American child. They feel more charitable to adopt a child across the other side of the world than one in his or her home state. In my home country children to be adopted include sibling groups often from a difficult background and disabled children the birth parents didn't want. The American star wants to adopt a poor little child from a developing country in Africa. He or she wouldn't know how to handle an American child that has been emotionally hurt for example. I am a teacher. One couple adopted two boys and a girl. One of the boys tried to set their house on fire. The boys were always in trouble at playtime. In the United Kingdom the big stars also donate more overseas than to their home country. There is a program called The Secret Millionaire and these help those that need donations and help in our home country.

I definitely agree with the points you've made. I also think that smaller contributions that other celebs make are not as publicized as those 'overseas' things. But I'm with the person who said that our country should be first priority. I hate to say it like that and sound selfish, but that's just what I think!!

As a non-American, it does seem strange. It is probably tax evasion, but then most charity work is tax evasion anyway. I am sure not all stars are so devious! Another thought is that they probably get much more for their dollars abroad in two ways. First is the pure financial side, but a good second is the fame. 15 minutes of fame in the USA can become decades of fame with a suitable investment abroad. However, your comment about the telethon is right on the nail - something very wrong there! If I had a spare mil or two, I could probably give a better answer.

Here, as far as taxes are concerned, Charity is Charity. You get the same deduction whether you help someone down the street or across the ocean. So I doubt if that is the reason. But, after making this discussion, I am finding that it may not be so much a problem of the stars not doing anything for the United States, and more a problem with the media reporting it. Another responder mentioned that Bradgelina gave money for the Hurricane relief effort in Louisiana; and only after they mentioned it did I remember it happening. When you watch the news, you always hear a lot more about a star giving overseas rather than what they do in their own backyard. The problem is, the media may have led and probably still is leading famous people to think they should direct their efforts overseas. Sad when you think the US may not be in such a predicament if more stars promoted home soil efforts!

hi, hope you don't feel so bad about this, the world looks up at America as a world leader when it comes to championing causes around the world and is viewed very much as a people who can stand up on their own, guess not just stars but other philanthropist would find it kinda awkward if they do it on their own soil(sorry but it's just my personal point of view),anyway I think the recent down turn and the way government handled it pretty much made people to rethink and reaccess, if indeed it is better to help others first or help your own.So cheer up, if people from my country go there to champion a cause it won't be given much attention, but if Americans champion a cause in my country it's a big thing, not judging if this is right or wrong, what I am trying to point out is this is just the world order right now, whether it will stay that all depends on all of us

I hope you don't think that I feel that stars shouldn't do anything for overseas efforts. I get that even with this economic slump we are in, we are still one of the richest nations in the world. It would be selfish not to help other countries at all. My thing is more need to be done at home. And after reading some of the responses, more that is done needs a spotlight shone on, so more people who have the means to will help.

i have no doubt that most use this as an opportunity to exploit themselves. keep in mind these are poor countries these people are trying to help. stars probably feel like they contribute more than enough to the u.s. in the form of taxes. If taxes are used appropriately then they have contributed.

You are Darknlovely are you? what's up! Haven't seen you in a long time . I see you have changed didn't really recognize you at first. Whatever, you been doing keep it up. You must have succeeded in your quest to better yourself as for the celebs they're just ego tripping trying to out do one another on who can adopt the most children from overseas, and who can seem to be the most charitable. It's all just a dog and pony show because all that they claim to do yet the problems still seems to persist.

I have often wondered this myself. I think more celebrities who choose to donate to things like this should take care of the people and animals in our own country before they start sending their money overseas. However, it is their money, so they can do whatever they want with it. I have never had one of those rich people do anything to help me or anyone I know though, so I really don't care what they do with it...
