What are some hiding places for kittens?

My daughters 6 month kitten is missing. I have looked in all the usual places. But I still can't find him. He is not a hider. He is a real busy body. Always wanting to know what you are up to and wanting to get into the middle of it. He is also an inside cat.
But here is the issue. Last time I saw him it was Saturday night and we were taking the christmas decorations down and took the tree and put it in the back of the truck. He was of course trying to "help" take decorations off the tree. I had to get him out from under the tree afterwards so it could be taken outside. Then I noticed later (about an hour) that he was not running around the house being "codependent kitty". I looked in all the boxes of christmas decorations. I have looked in all the closets, and cabinets, under beds...etc.. I even took everything out of my garage to look for him. We checked the truck. I have searched the neighborhood. Put up posters. But I just don't see him running off. He has NEVER been outside before so I would figure he would be outside in the yard screaming to come back in.
I have heard cats can hide in unusual places. Any ideas where else I can look? We are now on day 3 (as of tonight) that he is missing and we are getting desparate.
Any advice would be helpful.

Where did you haul the tree? Could he have gotten back in the tree and been hauled off by accident?
I would notify my vet, and other vets if your vet doesn't do it. I'd also notify the local shelters. Do you have photos of the kitten? I'd take them to my vets/other vets and to the shelter. I'd also have the kids go door-to-door with a picture to let the neighbors know you're looking for the kitten.
I wouldn't give up just yet. It took us two weeks to find our boy cat...
Good luck, Lilwonders!

We noticed he was missing before the tree got taken to the dump so we checked the tree and the truck...not there. I have called my vet. The local shelters, local rescue groups..etc. He is micro-chipped so they all said it was standard pratice to check for those chips when they got a stray in. So hopefully someone finds him and turns him in.
I have put posters up in my neighborhood and talked to my neighbors. I have walked the neighborhood countless times calling him. I don't know what else to do. It has been cold and rainy these past few days and I am sooo worried about him.

Other than the suggestions I made, I don't know what to say other than to go to wherever you took the tree if you haven't already. It just might be that he was in the tree and you didn't realize it. I definitely wouldn't give up, not for quite awhile actually. There was just an article in our local paper about a cat that had been missing for over three weeks and was safely returned home. It turned out someone had taken him in and later recognized his picture that had been put in the paper.
Good luck!
Annie

The tree was put in my back of my truck. But it was not taken to the dump for a few days. I know he was not in it. We checked to make sure he was not in the tree an hour after it was put in there. That is when we realized we could not find him. I have put up posters in the neighborhood. I have contacted the local shelters. I walked the neighborhood again today calling for him. I hope I get him back soon. I hope someone did not see him and decide to keep him. He is a small cute kitten after all.

Yep. Emily has been so upset. We made flyers with his photo and information and everyday we have walked the neighborhood looking for him and talking to our neighbors. They all know he is missing and that we are looking for him. So hopefully one of them see him and call us. The neighborhood has tons of posters up on the street signs (yes I know it is illegal but I want my cat back) and light poles.
I talked to the shelter we adopted him from back in August and they said sence we got him micro-chipped when we got him that if the pound or another rescue group get a hold of him that they would scan for the chip and call us. I still called all the shelters and emailed them all a picture of him.
I have gone to the two animal shelters that are near my house and both said they would keep an eye out for him.
It is wierd. It is like he dropped off the face the earth. I have checked and rechecked the whole house several times.
I hope he just comes walking back up to the house soon. I will probly think of strangling the poor thing for putting us all through this panic...but really if we get him back I think I will just be soooo happy I won't even think about being mad at him.

I wish I could make a suggestion - kittens go up and down, so look in trees or under houses/sheds/whatever is around where you live.
Taj, who was grown when this happened, spent a week in a tree because a dog scared him up and he couldn't figure out how to get down, without encountering the dog again.

Do you have a porch he could be under where he could be warm,Have you check your neighbours plus have you told other peple about the kitten he's to small to wander plus he would seek something to drink and eat and small bushes to stay warm.
But I hate to say be perpare for the worse if he's out in the cold.
I just hope your neighbour took him in,

I have checked and rechecked every room in the house. Still can't find him. I have even turned off the TV and everything else in the house so it was completely quiet so I could listen for him. He is talker and a big time "here kitty kitty" cat. YOu call him, he answers. So far...nothing.

They say that the best time to try to hear a cat as well as to call a cat is at night around 9 oclock, as at that time most people are indoors as well as there are less noises that are going on.They also say to rattle or bang a tin of food or the cats biscuits and the stand and listen, this way if a cat has been locked in a shed or has got caught up, you have more chance to hear the cat as well as the cat hear you calling it in for food.Do not give up, as if he has got out he may still come home if he is in the area and can hear you.Good luck, my cat came home after 3 weeks of being missing.

I put my granddaughters kitten outside yesterday because she was climbing the curtains! She is about the same age and I don't think she ever left my front porch! She just waited for the door to open..........I also haven't seen her climbing the curtains anymore!!!
I would go back and check the rooms again. Especially if you have the door shut. I have had our cats get themselfs shut in a room, we have looked for them and after a while found them. Possible when you looked before he was asleep and you overlooked him.
I thought the school was a good suggestion, also neighboring children. My daughter has 5 'stray' kittens that have always stayed on her porch where she feeds them, until they heard the grandkids out doors here playing and they came to play too! So maybe he got outside and heard kids playing(do you have a park nearby?) and joined them and they thought he was a friendly stray and gave him a home! I would check door to door with the neighbors, especially those with kids.

We went door to door yesterday and the neighbors that were not home I left a flyer on the door. So hopefully I hear something soon. He is a super friendly kitten so I could see him just walking up to someone when he got out and them taking him home. I will try again today when it stops raining. I have put posters up all over the neighborhood so hopefully someone realizes they pick up someone's kitten and bring him home.

Bottom of a trash can if it has almost empty, A shoe curled up asleep. Up high in a cupboard or bookshelf. In a dresser or desk drawer left open. Have had kittens hide in all those places. They like places that are warm, dark, small, cozy but where they can see everything at times. Or dark place, try behind fridge and freezer too. Hope you find him. Let us know

Thanks for those idea. I looked behind the fridge and freezer but did not pull them out to look. I will do that today and see if he is in there. I have called for him and he is not answering. He is a talker. So I really think he got out of the house.

Kittens can curl themselves up into the most precocious positions. nearly anywhere or anything can quickly become a hiding place for them.@lilwonders456 (8214)

I know. that is why I have looked in dressers, closets, cabinets, landry room, the garage, every place I could think of..I pull everything out of it and checked it. My house has never been so clean or organized...lol. I figured while I was in there I might as well put everything back up neatly and nicely and give a good wiping down.

It's good to read your discussion because I had a cat before and it was like yours as what you had described. Cats are unpredictable sometimes. My cat was not outgoing but once he was out of sight at home, I asked everybody and they didn't notice after two days my cat went home. Neighbors said, my cat went out for happy hours with other cats. I don't know if it's true. I'm just lucky it went home.

Hun, i'm so sorry to read that. I know how i felt when my cat was doing nearly the same when he was on similar age as your cat. I had problems when he was 9 months old, one car over him and then cats found him and scratched him a bit. It was in their period when male cats are looking for female cats. Mine was indoor too, but we allowed him to go our to take walks and when that happened i remember that his back legs were broken and cats were trying to beat him a bit. I was scared that the result will be bad and we went to the home of our vet to check him. Few days after that i walked with the cat for vet clinic and they made surgery to his legs, so he to be able to walk, but i still remember how it was when he couldn't move. After that accident we started to let him go out but only if we can see him.
Next summer my silly went out and found a place to watch outside cats in one building between our garden and the neighbors garden. The building was old and we couldn't go there to take him home, he just didn't want to come. I was so afraid that something can happen, because he doesn't have habits to deal with outside cats. Here we have a lot in our country, usually they are hungry, people care for them in their gardens and when it's the period of them to do stuff male-female, they become very cruel. I remember second incident with mine, his front legs was scratched again, both legs. We took him pills, i found way to give them the pills and soon after that he was o.k.
I don't know what to say, about the ideas where you can look for your cat, but i know that if he is not gelt, may be he is looking for female cat. I hope it's that way, usually male cats don't eat, don't sleep, don't do anything of their normal habits when they are in their period, they just want another cat.
Mine is gelt, so i got no experience like that, when their period comes and they walk our for days.

He is fixed so looking for a female cat should not be the problem. I have no idea where he could have gotten off to. But he is soo co dependent and playful that I don't see him running off. He has never run off or tried to get outside before.
And he would not be hiding in the house this long unless he is stuck in something. But I have looked and looked. I don't know what to do. I just hope I find him soon.

I just now reminded myself that in our garden live another female cat who has kittens every summer or so and i remember when she was letting the kittens out, even if my cat was gelt, he was so interested and stayed hours and hours looking the little kittens. May be something took his attention or may be someone took him? Is that possible some of your neighbors to not know that he is your cat and to take him home?

kittens like strings, small soft fluffy objects to play with. they usually like to be in small confined areas. I would say the best way is to put some food on a large squeeky toy. when the kitten goes for the food, you will hear it coming. if you have a backyard, then look in the backyard. look for dark/ dim places as they tend to like them such as allyways.

The people at the pound told me to put food on my front and back porch and tie a bell to the bowls so that if he came back and ate I would hear the bell and know he was back. So far...no ringing bells.
