My son is currently into reading the Harry Potter books, and because I’ve also read all 7 books, he’s come back to me with some questions about the characters. He wanted me to explain about dementors. I told him that they were the guards at Azkhaban, which is the prison where wizards are banished.
But I told him, sometimes these dementors go out of Azkhaban. And that wizard always knew when they were around because they suck all life out of people. They absorb all joy, and then people are left with extreme sadness.
Sounds like a few people I know!
Do you know of people like these? Who always takes out the joy in everything? Or that they leave you feeling sad when they get a hand on things? Do you also resort to calling them dementors?

Hello bounce.
As i read the title of this discussion i immediately started thinking of the Parlament members and other rulers in my country as close enough to the dementors definition as they seam to suck the happiness of most of the people they come in contact with, except their own.
I have read all the books as well, but the clossest to this definition might be stupid people - and i mean stupid as a peiorative word like drunk husbands that constantly beat their wifes for example, or child molestors.

A few weeks ago, I read a news story where some government officials here just gave themselves a raise. Now granted that it brought some happiness to them, it certainly suck a little bit of happiness to the people around them, and people reading the story.
And I agree with your definition of 'stupid people'. People like these have no place in society, and might as well be put in Azkhaban!
Thanks.

No I don't. I think if I knew anyone like this they wouldn't be in my circle for long.

No silence is louder! The blank expression I give them when they Try to connect. The fact that from that moment they cease to exist for me Says Volumes.

hi bounced ah yes the two alices. the one who moved is the one who co uld depress me in five minutes with how awful the food is, how bad the care givers are, and on and on nothing good or uplifting all was negative. I would try to say oh they make excellent eggplant parmesan and their stews are really so good don't
you think? The other Alice is still here but she has mellowed a bit and after she gets done with the stuff we do not always have she can talk about pleasant things so I have sort of got to like her when shes not on a food kick. I call them absorbers they absorb the good feelings you have and leave you feeling like a truck had run over you.

One response here mentioned some old ladies that also promote negativism in any discussion, so I am not surprised to hear that there'd be a few in your place Hatley. It's good to hear that one of the Alice has mellowed down. I think you should stay away from these 'absorbers'.
Thanks.

I love that you have metaphors for everything. Makes for a good discussion. I know some people like this - who are just "Debbie Downers" or "Negative Nancy's" who are just.. not really fun to be around. Therefore, as you can imagine..I've drifted away from the majority of these people in my life (still talk to a few). Any "friend" who makes you feel bad about yourself or is uber-selfish ..Well, I just couldn't stand that. I have never thought about "dementors" in a non-Harry-Potter way, but I might have to start using that one..

I guess I'm just not familiar with how girls interact, or treat people like these. As I consider a dementor a bit masculine, I could definitely see girls calling others names like you mentioned.
The sad thing is, as we 'normal' people drift away, they become all the more negative. Which further damages their social skills.

I can think of one person like this right off the top of my head and I'm glad that she is not a member here because if she knew that I was talking about her in this way she would be very peeved at me. That person that I can think of is my sister-in-law. Before she was a part of our lives we had a very tight, close-knit family. However, since she's been married to my brother, it seems like there is a lot of tension in our relationships that never used to exist.
