Furnace filters and fiberglass splinters

Hubby and I changed our furnace filters today and both of us managed to get some splinters in our fingers. I think I was able to get mine out by the home remedy of using duct tape although my finger is still sore. Hubby had to get to the ER for us because it went under the skin. He was placed on antibiotics and had an xray done. The doctor wants him to go to an orthopedic surgeon but he feels that that is overkill for a splinter. What are your thoughts on this?

Seems like a great deal, but think about this for a second if it swells any and he has so much discomfort it may not be a bad idea. I use to work in a surgery care center and this man came in with a tiny bump on the bottom of his foot and could not explain how it got this way.
He was given an antibiotic also and xray and nothing could be seen he was then told to return in 4 days, and he did and the bump was 2 times the size and not any better, the surgeon made a cut incision to find a sliver of a splinter in there and it was causing infection. We all saw the tiny splinter and could not believe it.
So best to watch it and see if it worsens, better safe then sorry. Hope he feels better.

For a splinter?? Yes, I think that's overkill. I don't know, though... does fiberglass continue to travel in your body, or does it stop where it is? I can see some concern if it keep driving deeper into the body like a porcupine quill does. It could end up causing problems.
