Hey reader friends of mylot. I like to read mystery, detective, and horror tales from Edgar Allan Poe, and I really like this type of literature. I specially like detective tales and novels, and I've read some books written by Georges Simenon, books about an inspector called Jules Maigret. Those are interesting novels, and I would like you to recommend me some other you've read or heard about. Also suggest some horror novels or tales, poetry too. Thanks for your answers.

I enjoy the Sherlock Holmes stories still. My partner and I listen to the Clive Merrison radio plays of the stories together. I also like the short horror stories of H.P. Lovecraft. They're really spooky. Also traditional british detective stories and spooky tales like The Woman in White, Jane Eyre and The Moonstone. I'm a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe too. I share his birthday!

I recently bought "A Study in Scarlet", and "The Hound of the Baskervilles", both books written by Arthur Conan Doyle. I hope to enjoy these Sherlock Holmes' stories. Thanks for the answer.

If you do enjoy Sherlock Holmes stories, you should try reading "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire". It's a creepy one!

I personally like Agatha Christie, she is really one of a kind, so if you haven't read her books yet, you should really try a few of them. Also, out of more modern writers I really like Harlan Coben. Very different from Agatha Christie, but still very good!

If you like Poe, you will probably like Stephen Crane's short stories. He's prose is just perfect. Very easy read.

If you like Simenon, you might like a book called Brighton Rock by Graham Greene. Like Simenon does in Dirty Snow, Greene really gets into the young criminal's head. One American writer of the same kind is Jim Thompson. He wrote The Grifters, The Killer Inside Me, and many more like that. Another writer of that kind is Richard Stark. He wrote a whole delightful series about a man without a discernible sense of right and wrong. I think the first book in the series was The Hunter, which was made into a film called Payback. His "hero" is a thief named Parker, who does quite well without morals. Yet the books are not immoral, somehow. Richard Stark is a pen name of Donald E. Westlake, and actually anything by Westlake is worth your time, if you like thriller-style or comic mysteries. He wrote both.

Oh, I have this for light book reading "The Cat" series. It's from Lilian Jackson Braun. I have collected a few and my favorite is "THE CAT WHO WAS NOT THERE". It's a detective story with two lovable cats playing detectives with their master Quill. Check this out if you want some light reading in detectives.

My very favourite mystery writers are Jeffery Deaver and Tess Gerritsen. Both of them write series about detectives and they are definitely worth reading! If you like your detective stories with an urban fantasy feel to them, I recommend Jim Butcher and his Dresden Files.
