Great Speech, Obama!

It was more of a eulogy than a political speech, exactly what was needed! I liked that he made the victims and heroes in this senseless violence the centerpiece. These were the words that needed to be said today... "The loss of these wonderful people should make every one of us strive to be better in our private lives - to be better friends and neighbors, co-workers and parents. And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their deaths help usher in more civility in our public discourse, let's remember that it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy, but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation, in a way that would make them proud. It should be because we want to live up to the example of public servants like John Roll and Gabby Giffords, who knew first and foremost that we are all Americans, and that we can question each other's ideas without questioning each other's love of country, and that our task, working together, is to constantly widen the circle of our concern so that we bequeath the American dream to future generations." I especially liked this part... "Scripture tells us that there is evil in the world, and that terrible things happen for reasons that defy human understanding. In the words of Job, "when I looked for light, then came darkness." Bad things happen, and we must guard against simple explanations in the aftermath." He's right, simple explanations, especially those made in the heat of the moment, don't do us any good. All in all I liked the speech, I think it was just what was needed today. Thanks Prs. Obama!

I agree a very nice speech. I like to see our President give speeches on UNITING our country rather than divide it.

Yes, it was a mighty good speech! President Obama is not only a fine represent President ...he is also a very fine parental model. He cares about what his children think of him ... I appreciate that! This is who Obama is, compassionate and caring ... to say the least civil! I had no doubt that our Presidednt would meet the bar .... his eloquence is never fettered!

Parental model? Not even! Oh, he's been fettered in speeches. He's come off as a bumbling freshman at times... but when the people needed the president to come through... he did.

Thank you, Ted, for being honest and objective here! I'm sure there are some people whose dislike or even hatred of the President prevents them from giving him credit when it's due, just as I realize there were those who were the same way about former Presidents Bush and Clinton and on back. Basically, I thought it was a beautiful service and quite fitting. The people in attendance really needed something uplifting and the news that Rep. Giffords had opened her eyes certainly was just that. Also, honoring the heroes from that tragic day was the right thing to do as well as telling a little something about each of the deceased, particularly little Christina. Annie

I was pleasantly surprised--and no teleprompter!! I expected some partisan rhetoric but he avoided that and seemed very sincere. He pulled out all the stops and made a eulogy that was heartfelt and inspiring. For the first time, I'm proud of this president! Kudos to Obama! I started a discussion on this but it was about the behavior of the audience. As wonderful as President Obama's speech was, the behavior of the audience was equally as disrespectful to the deceased.

I agree! This guy was mentally ill. It isn't a political topic at all, even though the media turned it into one. We must look at the background of this mentally ill person! Both the school and the community knew this young man had deep mental issue yet nothing was done. Our jails are full of them. We don't pay any attention as to why people are locked up! They are out of sight, out of mind, yet we still pay the price.

No wonder he is the president of the United States. It really sounded from the heart. I wish I heard this live. I haven't heard previous presidents to talk like the way he did.
