32 bit vs 64 bit operating system.

i have an intel core2duo 1.86ghz 64bit ready processor and 3gb ddr2 ram memory. My question is that can i go for windows 7 64bit edition on my system. will it give me a better performance than the 32bit one on my configuration. please help guys. thanks.

I'm in a similar situation and doubts. From what I've researched, 64 bits may give you some better performance with the proper drivers and programs, but only in some particular cases. 3GB ram can run Win7 64 bits well you may test it if you want. Personally, I think going for 32 bits is better, althougt I has to test it before. 64 bits needs all special programs and drivers to run and get all the performance benefits. If you're a regular user, I think it's easier to stay with 32 bits and go for all the compatibility it brings.

Unless you will be looking to upgrade your memory to something greater than 4gb, there is no point in installing the 64bit system as it will give you no improvement on performance.
