A one way flight

Would you ever think of flying one way and then staying in a lovely place before coming home by train, bus and ferry? An example would be fly from London to Athens then to visit one of its islands. Then get a bus to the port then a ferry followed by trains. So the traveler could see Italy, Switzerland and France on the way back home. Another idea would be for a person that lives in Hong Kong he or she could fly to Singapore and stay there a while. Coming home he or she could travel through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. What do you think of this idea of a one way flight then come home overland or sea? If you planned such a trip which flight would you do? If so which countries would you want to see on your way home?

I tried this one before but not on an international destination. I took a ferry from Manila to one of the exotic islands of Palawan. We went to Coron. I was so amazed. We passed by islands with limestone cliffs. It was beautiful... Then coming back home we went by air. We took a flight on a 19 seater aircraft. It was so cool. You can see the different islands and its white sand beaches. And the beaches, you can see all the shades of green and blue...

Wow! That sounds like it was an amazingly enjoyable and special trip. I can imagine the limestone cliffs, the aquamarine ocean and the white sandy beaches. I have heard that Palawan is a very beautiful island and superbly unspoilt. Coming home on the 19 seat plane I hope you got to see some of the views. It is the sort of one way flight and journey by ferry I would adore.

I would plan to fly into Cebu and take a ferry over to Bohol Island. Somehow I would love to go all the way down to Palawan but would probably have to access it from Manila. I have a travel guide book about the Philippines and it looks gorgeous there. In your photos I liked the Thai beach. That is another must see destination. I have seen the movie called 'The Beach'.

maximax8, While your idea may sound good here, I must say that there are a few considerations regarding one way tickets. For one - immigrations, I believe you will understand that a lot of borders do not treat one way ticket holders lightly especially those that arrive with pre-applied visas. Usually, these passengers are asked to have a return or onward journey tickets or risked being denied entry into the country. The other issue is that one way tickets are usually more expensive than a return ticket. So, economically wise - unfeasible. I know of some who beat the system by buying a return ticket and going for a refund on the unused return portion. Again, I have to advise caution and check the pre-existing conditions of the ticket before doing so - as most of them (special cheap fare tickets) do not have a refund value for half utilized tickets. On your idea, I had traveled on an open journey ticket while holidaying in Europe where I arrived in Madrid, Spain and traveled by rail using the Eurail pass to various European countries like France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Sweden and Netherlands where I flew back from.

Hi Sky Success. You have mentioned something very important because immigration very often want to see an onward or return flight. Say an English person arrives in America on a one way ticket immigration might not let that traveler into the USA. So it is a very good idea for the traveler to have a refundable return ticket. Then he can continue traveling overland and maybe come home by cruise ship. If a working holiday maker comes to Australia on a one way ticket he might not like the one way prices back home.

There are so many places that I would love to experience it is hard to say just one. I suppose I would start at home first...just to get a feel for the road trip. I would take a one way flight to California and then travel across country using whatever means were available. If there was a train..I'd ride it...a bus..I'd take it. If there was nothing...maybe just rent a car. I think it would be amazing to be able to do something like that. My next stop...Europe.

Everyone forget Athens! Bus, train and ferry services are on strike three or four days each week! The French love their strikes too. Nice idea, but definitely not in Europe.

I hate strikes. When I had a flight booked an a particular airline they kept having strikes. I only found out five days before our flight from London to Vancouver that they weren't going to strike that day.
