Wood bedding or paper?

I was told that getting any pine or cedar wood bedding can be harmful for guinea pig bedding. The pet book says that the fine wood particles can cause eye irritation and infections. Does anyone have any experience with such bedding. I have been using recycled pet bedding that comes treated with baking soda. It works great and I have used it for years.
But what about wood shavings? Is this true?

I used to have a neighbor that raised small furry critters, and they said this can be true but may not affect all. They always used a very fine sand, I can't remember what it was called.

Gosh! Sand? Fine sand? I will have to look into that. Sounds like an easy way to keep them healthy and clean for a long time. I guess I will stick to the recycled paper bedding I get now as it has worked for years and avoid the wood type. The last thing I was to have to deal with is trying to find a good guinea pig vet in town. I don't think we even have one.
Thanks for the reply and suggestion! =D
