I've always wonder this... I mean, if adog throws up...Will you, being around them, get sick? Also, can you get your dog sick? Not by giving them too many treats but if you have a cold of flu, can they catch something? I've heard it both ways that you can and can't get sick from them. What do you think? Thanks!

There are very few illnesses that can transfer from dogs to humans. The most obvious one is rabies, but staff infections are another thing to watch out for. There are a few others as well. The normal things dogs get on a regular basis are generally non-transferable. The cold or a flu can't be shared. Dogs can get a "cold" but it's not actually the same disease as the one humans get. I think the only concern from a dog who throws up is if he happens to have roundworms or something similar. It's not all that common though.

yah its true. about the roundworms youve mention, intestinal worms are present in them at various times in their lives. If not treated for these worms, can them spreed them through stool in the yard, or by laying on bed with your child. the worms are microscopic and kids easily transmit them to their hands or mouth.

I have wondered about it too. And not only about dogs but about cats too. I wonder what all we can get from each other. I know one thing for certain I never let any animal lick me in the face or on the mouth. I think that is just plain nasty. I know they have fewer germs in their mouths compared to us but you know they clean their entire bodies with their tongues and they walk on the dirty ground, etc. And for that matter we as humans put dirt and bacteria on them when we pet them. Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

I always wondered about that too. I think you can get tapeworms if you swallow fleas or flea eggs too. That was one I remembered. Yuck!

Hello Czylove and welcome to myLot. Normally, if a dog throws up and you are around them, you don't get sick, especially if you respect the rules of hygiene. Speaking of diseases that can be taken from our dogs, I knew that Sarcoptic mange is such a disease. I also knew that ringworms can be transmited from dogs to humans if we don't respect the rules of hygiene. Rabies is well known for its high risk of being transmited from an infected dog to a human. But your question made me curious and I performed some research to see if there are other diseases transmissible from dogs to humans. Here's what I found, a very comprehensive article on this subject: http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/zoonoses_dogs.aspx If you have a cold or flu, you can't give it to your dog. But you can bring home to your dog some bacteria, viruses or parasites if you come in contact with an infected animal.

It is sad, indeed. I heared about a few people who survived rabies, but I haven't heared anything about dogs who escaped this lethal disease. Usually, when a dog is proved to carry rabies, he is put to sleep as soon as possible, even before he shows any sign of illness. Luckily there are anti-rabies vaccines, and for those who love their dogs and don't want to loose them because this virus there is a way out. Vaccinate your dog every year agains rabies and you can eliminate the risk of seing him sick or to pass you the deadly virus.

Yes, I Agree with the other posts... rabies and ringworm is contagious and there are other things such as fleas and ticks that will get on us and affect us from our furry friends. Also be careful when a dog kisses you because they do clean certain parts of their body and you do not want to get feces in or around your mouth. I also wipes my dogs paws after coming in from outside at night with an antibacterial all natural soap on a damp cloth... (since they do sleep in the bed) just in case they step on another dogs waste outside. I know they say a dog's mouth is cleaner than a humans but germs are still present.

Yes I agree also all your comments. :) Dogs mouth is cleaner than humans? haha. the way i heard it when i was a kid was that a dog mouth is "sterile". I can even recall someone in my neigborhood attempting to prove this anybody who'd sit still for it by letting his dog lick the inside of his mouth. haha! Im scared with rabies. I agree with your last said "Germs are still present"
