How old is 'old enough' for a discussion when it is too old to resurrect and you

....can start a new one about the same general topic without worrying about the 'duplicate discussion' issue? Several months? A year?
To me I'm thinking several months is okay. A lot of users/members do not go back to old discussions and check them, and there are actually a ton of inactive users now. What do you think? I use the search feature and obviously if I see something is like a year old, I may start another discussion about the same topic, likewise if it's like 5 or 6 months old and there have been no responses for 5 or 6 months. Now, if something is 5 months old but there's been recent activity, in the last few weeks, last week, or last days or hours, well of course I'll just post on that one.
What do you tend to do?

Let me start by saying that this is JUST MY OPINION & in NO way reflects the opinion of myLot!!!
The Guidelines state...
Make sure you search for existing topics before starting new discussions.
I don't see anything there saying we can't start a topic similar to another. It is MY opinion that we are NOT to copy others discussions word for word. With over 200,000 members it is virtually impossible to come up with totally different topics. I think that rule is there to say "come up with different discussions". I'm sure we don't need over 100 discussions on the same topic on the same day; however myLot time is much shorter than real life time. I'd say stay away from current events as much as possible. I know I've done my search before starting a discussion & found nothing...probably because I didn't think the same way as the poster. After posting my discussion, I'd get responders saying I did a discussion on this just this morning. When I checked out their discussion, they would have maybe 3 responses where my discussion had 20 or more. Were they the same discussion??? I think NOT!!! On the other side, I've seen some where they had 20 or more responses & mine only garnered 3 or 4. Still NOT the same discussion ONLY a similar topic. In each case, my discussion wasn't deleted. It's my humble opinion that after a few days on myLot a discussion has pretty much been forgotten!!! You can tell when you pull up a discussion with a similar topic whether it is still active or not. If it's not active, I'd go for it. One thing for sure is, if I'm wrong, myLot will let me know by deleting my discussion. All I can tell you is I have very few discussions deleted & the few that have been should have been as I obviously had a lack of judgment & clearly violated a guideline!!! My opinion is NOT popular with some myLot members, but I will stand by them as just MY opinion!!!

They also say:
"Don't Post similar or identical postings."
and until they clarify we can only deduce what we should do. Quality and originality wins in the end though.
Just my opinion too

LOL! There are times when MY opinion is not popular with some mylot members either, but I look at it this way - perhaps their opinion is not popular with me either. One is not better than the other one, both have equal right to be expressed and exist here. In a 'perfect' discussion, both would and there would be lively discussion both ways, and it would be interesting, which is of course the purpose of this site.
I too have experienced what you have, made a discussion that received many responses and looked at a 'similar' one that got maybe 3 or 4 responses, or posted my own that received but 3 or 4 and seen another that received 35. You just never know what will float someone's boat a particular day. I think a big part of it is how active or how many views a discussion gets. If someone posts it and several people see it right away and post, it stays up near the top of 'current' and 'top' discussions and more people will thus see it, and probably add their two cents.
I don't think I've ever had to worry about something being deleted. Like I've said before, several years ago, it wasn't like this, there really was no big 'omg I'm going to be deleted' sort of attitude from members. It was something that happened rarely and only in matters where someone was being attacked or harrassed, or plaigarism was occurring. I really don't understand why anybody would copy and paste or take anything word for word that wasn't theirs. I think that's rather disgusting and foolish, I've seen people steal vids on youtube and try to pass them off as their own, which just might work - except that people generally put a watermark or a symbol, something to represent themselves, and if a vid is stolen and reuploaded, that mark is still visible.
Yep, and I tend to agree with you Lady M, each user here is UNIQUE, therefore unless someone is being an idiot like I stated in the previous paragraph and STEALING someone else's discussion or response by copying and pasting, even if a discussion may be construed as SIMILAR, it is still a unique discussion in and of itself. I see no other posters who post like I do, and even if I post ABOUT the same thing, maybe I'm not really posting about the same thing, know what I mean? Two people could post a topic and title it 'cafeteria food' but theirs might be about the COST and mine might be about the QUALITY. Or maybe theirs is about college campus food and mine is about the free lunch program at an elementary school. Some might argue 'it's the same thing' but it's not.

I knew you'd be the first here to make a comment. That's the beauty of myLot...there is NO one answer. I'm still of the opinion that you can post a discussion on the same topic without it being similar or identical. Everybody puts their OWN spin on a topic thereby making it unique!!! I think you just need to accept the fact that you have your opinion & I have mine. If we live to be 10,000 years old, we'll NEVER agree. So maybe agree to disagree???

I have a similar discussion last month and up to now I don't feel that it's be resolved, and I guess it won't be unless we here from the people behind myLot themselves.

I posted a similar discussion and I'm not satisfied with the answers yet that's why I don't feel it's been resolved already.

I am guilty of not going back to respond to responses from an older discussion, so I can't blame another user if they don't. I like to see responses from the OP to my comments, so based on that I figure everybody likes to see responses to whatever they add, whether a discussion is today's or from November lol.

I don't know of all the discussions that are posted here. I only check page 1 and/or page 2 of today's discussions and certainly that is not qualified as knowing all the discussions here. So, I don't how old is too old and when to resurrect a discussion. I guess if you have it titled and worded differently, you can go with it. Even with the page one and two of everyday discussions, I saw many similar discussions (both title and wordings).

I don't actually see that many similar discussions, not ones that have been posted the same day or within the same week, but I'm not here hours a day, every day any more either. Sometimes I'll do a search to look for something I want to start and I search to make sure there wasn't another discussion someone recently made. Once in awhile it'll return several discussions about the same thing, but when I look at them, the last response was made 7 months ago, and I'll look at the profile for the original poster and they haven't logged in in.... 7 months lol. I don't feel bad at all for starting a new discussion in that case, because very rarely do posters who have totally quit come back, especially to old discussions.
I usually start off with the home page and I kinda go from there. I check out the top discussions, hot topics, discussions friends started, and I also browse the ones on the side that are sometimes related topics to whatever I was just posting to.

I have not thought about this...resurrecting a topic. But I have my doubts and a question: It would still be another's topic, isn't it? Do we have a copyright on discussions posted?
On the other hand, we could post something on the same topic but approach it in a different way...like variations on a theme.
But it is nice you bringing it out and getting vrious responses. Have a nice day, mommyboo!

Well, like I said in another response, each of us post uniquely, and people also perceive things differently, so I really don't see the harm in 'similar' discussions, often I do a search or I see 'similar' discussions in the sidebar and I go look at them and sometimes I post in ALL of them. They are not the same discussion, and there are often totally different posters in each of the discussions, different side conversations, and different strings of comments, it's neat actually. Sometimes I see some of the same people in the discussions, but if they are friends, you figure some of us are mutuals and in each other's friends lists, there are lots of those 'six degrees' types of connections among people here at mylot

dont hezitate in posting your discussion just post that and if that post will be deleted you can understand automatically, that this discussion has been done some some time before and they dont delete you can extend your discussion and share your views

I really don't understand this shift into users now being all freaked out that a discussion will be deleted. Is there some reason for everybody to be all neurotic about that now? Common sense, people. For the record, I don't think I've ever had a discussion deleted. I had a COMMENT deleted once but that's not the same thing.

I will definitely start new discussions when I see that a topic hasn't been used for several years. There have even been a couple of times that I will start a new discussion when the topic hasn't been touched in a year. However, anything more recent than that I will just resurrect the older discussion because I don't want to run the risk of having a discussion that I've started end up in the mylot graveyard.

Good question. I'm also wondering about the same thing, not because I want to resurrect a post but because I've been seeing a lot of posts that are very similar to old posts. I know I've been guilty of this myself.
There are discussions that were created yesterday, and I answered ever so zealously, and then tomorrow or in the next few days, a very similar discussion would pop out and I'd try to answer again, but I'll find myself at a loss for words because I've already stated my opinion on a different discussion.
But to answer your question, i think, 2-3 months is old enough. With the number of posts and discussions everyday, 2-3 months is enough to bury a discussion

LOL! Definitely enough time to bury a discussion - unless it receives a LOT of input and views. Once in awhile I'll just READ a discussion, because I go there to get information from it, not necessarily to add anything to it. I really don't understand why people would start up a new discussion when another one about the same thing was posted just a few days or a week ago, but I'm thinking that new(er) users don't realize they should look for current discussions before just making one. Sometimes I get the feeling there are people here who aren't here for the discussion, they are strictly here for payout, and if that's all you're here for, the quality of what you post and how you post is severely lacking....
