This is an interesting issue. Why fish don't weary to swim? Because the fish can not live without water and only water can bring the fish happy,or perpaps only the fish know the answer.

Hi, Thanks for such an interesting topic. I am sorry, I disagree! Fishes do get tired, and they do take rest. Since they are extremely different creatures than us and you are thinking from human perspective, it looks like they always keep swimming and don't weary. Amazingly, you have aquarium and you did not notice fishes taking rest! They live in water only. Their body mechanism made in such a way that they do not have to lie down to take rest. They just stay still and take rest. Fishes do not close their eyes while sleeping because they do not have eyelids like us. They sleep with eyes open. Another fact is that their body movement aids in their breathing, i.e., in this way water enters their body passively and comes out passively, without wastage of any energy. Please notice you aquarium when there is pin-drop silence and lights are extremely low. You can find them resting in a still state, but with open eyes.

Intersting question indeed, I love see my fishes swimming all day too. I think that they actually do sleep, but do not do it as we do, it may be hard to notice since they do not have eyelids, but you can notice them a bit less active by nights. Yet, they must swim all the time, because they need water to go through their gills, cannot be with no motion for a long time.

Hello Asliah, Have you ever try to wake up during the night, turn on the light and see what your fish are doing? I have. They were resting, some at the bottom of the tank, some hidden under tge plants or logs. I think they must spend time in an energy-saving state which can be compared with human sleeping, though it is probably different than the real "sleep". Many fish rest on or under decorations at night.

Yes, i have noticed that too. I don't have a fish but when my sister had taken care of one i noticed it is not moving at all at night and just staying in one place.

Hmmm interesting question like other question why birds not weary to fly? You got a logic? Anyway back to your discussion or question, why fish don't weary to swim? I return to you another question. If the fish stopped and tired to swim, what possibly happened to them? Possible die or something happened to their flips. Like people if we are weary to breath, what possible happened to us... that's all.. see you around

This problem seems simple,in fact, difficult to answer clearly. Philosophers may be more willing to discuss such issues.lol

They have got a aquatic life. And they are active every time.Movement of its fins is a indication of health in fishes. What will you do if they do not move? You will get worried.

All I can say is I wish the fish would have a rest when I go down to the water and throw a line in, I would be more than happy to see them resting and feeling hungry and just feel the urge to swim slowing over to my hook and bait so I could yank them out and whack them on the grill and feed the family :)

Fish are designed to swim, if they don't, they will die. Their gills need fresh water moving through them just like we need air in our lungs to keep breathing. Even if you see a fish just floating in the water they are allowing water to move through their gills. Sharks swim while they are sleeping, pretty strange.

I believe they do go into rest or sleep modes. It is when they are at the bottom of the tank almost like resting upon the gravel. of coarse they do not stop flapping thier fins but they are just hanging out in one spot at the bottom. They also dont have eyelids so their eyes are still open.

Perhaps it is not as hard as sitting, when you do it often. I suppose at times they could just float and not swim as hard.

I have asked this question before but when i noticed one night with my sisters fish, it is really not swimming at all and i said to myself, oh so the fish does get tired of swimming then. They don't actually sleep like the typical sleep of closing their eyes and not moving at all i think they just rest from swimming and sometimes i just see them on the bottom part of the tank or even in places where there is something to rest on.

Hi asilah, if fish could talk, do you think they might say "Why is that human keep looking at us? Doesn't she need to rest? Why does she keep walking here and there. She's so heavy (compared to us), don't we feel tired? If I were her, I would just sit all day." Of course we know they don't talk, unless it is in the cartoons. Yet from the way they swim in school, we know they communicate. Most of the Lotters (including myself) are probably not scientist. In the words of the cascades, the best I can say is "There must be a reason, I like to know why...oh why...." Just enjoy looking at them while they enjoy a pretty girl looking back. I am sure they do rest....unless your fish are mechanical machines. Even then, you will need to change batteries.

Actual they do get tired and rest. They are animals after all. Fish has muscles and muscles can't work 24/7. Most likely when you are not around they are resting. When they are resting they usually remain still. Remember fishes has no eyelids so don't use that as an observation.

Hi Asliah, the small fishes are better at swimming and darting here and there. They need to hide away from the predators fast if they want to live. The big fish sometimes get very lazy. My fish is one example. It is very active when it was young. Now it is too lazy. Sometimes I have to scare it so that it starts to swim, otherwise it will just sit in one corner, doing nothing.

asliah, your question is so tempting me to respond. I am sorry if my answer is not favouring you. Okay, fish are created by God to swim. If u take them out of water they die soon. Fish are potrayed in 'Nemo' as very active creatures and they have emotion too, haven't they?

Fish swim for only one reason, to eat. They go to where the food is. Fish do rest, they rest in the calm waters where it's cold near where they "smell" food. This is why you find fish in the eddies of streams where water is calm. You find them under overhanging brush and logs to rest in the shade, waiting for food to swim by. In lakes you will find them deep along shelves, going up a few feet to the smaller fish to eat.

Well they are called fish right? So they are entirely different from us. Why do fish don't get tired of swimming, is like asking why don't people get tired of moving? It's their very nature and they were created like that so that's exactly the reason why. Do they sleep? Yes they do but not like the way we do. Every creature were created distinct from one another and fish sleeps in a different way than us.

Asliah, Fishes also sleep. But when there is a very quite atmosphere. Because you may know that they are very sensitive to noise. They also take rest as we do. If you observe them with your light off and with a very calm and quite surrounding, then you will definitely find them in an inactive situation. In many cases, I have seen that fishermen do catch fishes at night, specially in early morning. Because in this time they are quite inactive and in resting position.

Fish won't be tired of swiming just like you won't get tired of breathing and eating,it is for live because fish can not live without water, once a fish get away from water, she must die.
