While watching a Cricket match on the TV I noticed that the players are having some numbers on the back of T shorts worn by them. I couldn't associate these numbers with any thing so far as some numbers are too big to associate like number 55 etc. Can any one explain what are these numbers, are they the international ranking of the player or what? I am really confused...Please respond ! Thanks !

Those are just simple numbers. They do not mean or signify anything. They are not the rank of the players. Its just used to denote each player. The number is chosen by the player making sure that no one else has the same number. For example,Sachin Tendulkar has the number 10.When asked by a reporter, why he chose "10",he replied that its because he is "TEN"dulkar :) Hope, this clears all your doubts in your mind :) Cheers!

it actually stands for the jersey number. this thing is to limited to cricket but is prominent in every game including football and hockey etc. this is surely not their international ranking. this is just a number player chooses which he considers to be lucky for him...

Thanks dear Pankaj! Yes I know that this is Jersey number and I am really surprised to know that the numbers are displayed just like that only without any significance, except for the fact hat some people may have some numbers lucky for them! My point is why only then the numbers! why not the pictures of some lucky animals, cartoon characters or persons instead of these numbers ? LOL ! Thanks for responding!

The colorful clothing with number at the back similar to soccer and rugby are all to be credited to Kerry Packer's cricket circus started way back in seventies. Before Kerry Packer came to the seen the cricket was played only with clean white clothing even for one days. Kerry packer gave the glamorous touch to the cricket there by forcing Cricket Australia to come to his terms. The number at the back of the T shirts has no significance and has nothing to do with their numbers.

Thanks dear msdivkar for your elaborative information regarding this colourful dress code being followed in one day matches. Since when this thing has started? Regarding the numbers these numbers have no significance to the players and team except for serving the purpose of adding colour and design to the dress? Thanks for the great piece of information!
