I don't know what it is like for you, but around here, you have to have a dog on a leash when you are outside of the property line. Still half of the dogs around here, are running around free. I cannot count the number of dogs around here that have ended up in my yard and I have had to call their owners. I think people would feel bad if their dog got loose and bit someone. Granted, most dogs around here are harmless but dogs, like humans, have their bad days. Do you feel like that people who do not keep an eye on their dog and keep them on a leash show a lack of responsibility?

There is no reason for a dog to be off leash other than someone forgetting to close a gate and the animal escapes...
All dogs should have a leash on them when they are off their property. I train dogs, nothing is sadder when someone looses a pet because they ran away or got out of thier yard and the whole family is runnung around looking for thier pet..

Yeah that is sad. All it takes is one time for the dog to run out in traffic, no care in the world. And then, I don't think I need to elaborate on what the worst case end result of that would be. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I agree, people who don't keep an eye on their dog show a real lack of responsibility! Almost every time I take our dog for a walk (on a leash), we encounter someone else's dog running loose. We have a leash law in our town but of course people ignore it. The leash law even extends to cats. Our neighbor lets her cats run and of course, they come into our yard. This upsets me because I have a special place in our front yard for birds and of course, that's where her cats are drawn to because they want to kill the birds.
People who let their pets run loose shouldn't be allowed to have them.

Indeed it is a very big lack of responsibility. Pets are something that are not a right to have. Rather they are something that you should take care of. In many ways I would compare them to not all people should have pets, just like not all people should have children. Its really parents tend to not keep an eye on their children and thus when something happens, they should be at fault. So why not the same thing for pet owners? Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Wow! I would hate to live in place that lacked such freedom. My dogs walk to heal behind me. Keep you dog on a leash if you have not trained it but better still train it. Dogs enjoy training and benefit from it. A trained dog is happier than an untrained one. Those that let untrained dogs wander around in urban areas are irresponsible and should not have dogs

It is a necessity sometimes. If your dogs are good and trained, I wish you the best. Actually I do agree, that trained dogs are mostly well behaved and those who cannot train their dogs should not have it. It is just irresponsible. No matter how much you think you love your dogs, you must not love them enough not to train them. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

People who ignore leash laws are just inviting disaster. It could be an accident just waiting to happen. You can not gain control of your pets properly without a leash. these laws are made to protect everyone. We should use them with wisdom.@megamatt (14290)

Yes it is for our protection. And also the protection of your pets. You would hate to see them have to get put down because they attacked someone. Granted that's a worst case scenario but it has happened. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Definitely as well as neglect and non-caring, as most people love pets and certainly would not to have a day where as that pet attacked a person and or a child.
There is no way of knowing when their pet is going to lash out. Like all laws this is one that needs to be enforced as often times I hear on the news where as a dog mulled a child. Then the owner comes on to say this is so not like their dog to have ever demonstrated this type of behavior.
My thinking is if not only should they assure the safety of their pet but more so for all passerby.

Yeah no one expects their pet to attack someone. Of course, you hear the same thing about people who do grisly, violent crimes, so really, dogs are in many ways like humans. They can be great, and loyal but they can in fact lash out and just snap one day. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Yes, it's irresponsibility. Nobody should disconsider others rights to enjoy their properties by letting the dogs roam free. Dogs may destroy others properties, they can bite innocent people, they can foul the environment or they can only scare people around the neighborhood. Plus, if those dog owners say they love their dogs, they must think that such dogs are exposed to so many risks.

If they loved their dogs so much, they would not let them run wild. As much as a dog could potentially cause harm to someone, dogs tend to like to roam and some of them could run out into traffic. Then that would be the end. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Definitely! I would love to go on early morning walks but what stops me are the dogs that roams around. Carrying a stick does not help my confidence nor give me courage and dare the dogs. Oftentimes while walking home I would meet a dog and I would turn away from the dog or simply stop wondering what the dog would do. It really scares me. I wish dogowners would give a little more consideration to neighbors.

Yes, you might think your dog is well trained. However, if the human does not have an idea of what they should do in a responsible manner for their dog to keep an eye on it, it just makes you wonder how well the dog is really trained not to attack people. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.
