Do you think Obama supporters will heed his call for "civility"?

Obama made an impassioned call for "civility". There are many who don't think even he will live up to it, but I disagree. Prs. Obama may be many things, but stupid he is not. He's set himself up pretty well. He calls for civility, but he never chastened his pundits or supporters for any lack of it. What he's done is made it so HE can be civil, but use the uncivil tone of his pundits and supporters to his advantage. He doesn't have to get his hands dirty, but he knows he can count on those who will. So, the question is, will Obama's supporters heed his call for civility? Will we all of the sudden see fewer calls for Palin or her daughters to get raped? Will we hear anyone from the left apologize for how "uncivil" they were with Bush? It's kind of telling that Obama supporters celebrate him spanning the globe, apologizing to anyone who cares to listen, for any injustice (perceived or real) except the Americans on the right... Many on the left openly accuse TEA partires every hateful name in the book, but if anyone calls Obama anything but "President" they are racist and hateful. So with this buffer, Obama can say or do anything he wants, he can appear to be moving to the middle... or continue stuffing his agenda down our throats.. all the while smiling, genuflecting and asking us "can't we all just get along"... but as long as he has his minions doing the dirty work, he can appear as civil as a Southern Belle at blossom time.

A Southern Belle at blossom time...lol Did left-wingers actually call for Palin and daughters to be raped? That is disgusting and unacceptable. Tell me those were just trolls on the internet, and not semi-respected people...I consider myself to the left but how on earth can anyone say things like that? Palin actually drives me nuts but I wouldn't wish rape on my worst enemy...unless perhaps I was raped and I was wishing that the rapist would himself get raped in jail. I think it would natural to have that one uncharitable thought. I like your discussions. I don't agree with most of your points of view, but you're using your brain and thinking about things, which is more than a lot of people in this world can say.

Great point RebeccaScarlet. That is very disgusting but the point is that both the left and right have people who do and say "disgusting" and dispicable things. And it's easier for some of them to troll behind the safety of their computer screens.

Hi ParaTed ... I find all credible evidence that President Obama speaks and continuously calls for "civility" of ALL Americans ... he does not speak to one section of America or one group ... competely unlike prominient spokespersons across the political aisle whose "supporters" consider themselves the only "real" Americans ... the only "real" patriots of this country. I find President Obama's impassioned call a noble one indeed! Whether people heed that impassioned call is completely their choice. My hope is that more than few do just that ... ah, play but please play nice.

Oh, I agree he wasn't confining his words to just his supporters. However, it is up to supporters to carry out those they support. That's what support is.

He should be held responsible for what his supporters and backers say. Isn't that what the media is doing with the Conservatives when they oppose something and the media can find some off the wall blogger and blame the Conservatives for what these people say. Lets hold him responsible for what the left wing says until the media does its job in exposing who is behind the attacks.

No, I didn't say he should be held responsible at all. I asked if people think his supporters will show their support by heeding his admonition. I also pointed out that he's in a good position because he can remain civil and let his supporters rage on. Then he can just say, "well, I tried". Him using the vitriol of his supporters isn't saying he's responsible for it.. he's just in a position to profit from it.

I think it will be business as usual. Mr. Obama has made a very public appeal for civility but I don't think he expects his followers to do the same, although he will. After all, he can't force anyone to restrain or change their behavior, right? I was appalled at the insinuation of Nazism made recently toward the republicans because they want the "health care" bill repealed and/or replaced. That shows you where the whole thing is going. But if the republicans speak in the same manner the media hammer will come down forcefully. Obama is very smart when it comes to manipulation, he's a master--or his handlers are. It would be nice if everyone could be polite and civil but it's never been that way in politics and I doubt it ever will. That's how politics are.
