How to lose weight effectively ?

hello everyone , i want to ask how to lose weight effectively. i exercise 4 times a week and eat properly , how come im gaining weight rapidly. can you give some tips? and btw , i read that over sleep makes you thin and lack of sleep make you fat., but my friend says the vice-versa , lack of sleep makes you thin and over sleep makes you fat.. which one is real?
