I just heard on the news that this year banks and credit unions are going to raise fees on using debit cards. This is rediculous, the economy is bad enough. Some people get a little bit of money hear and there and you have to have a bank account to be able to cash your check. But,by the time you pay all the fees, now they are being raised you might as well not even have a check at all, because it will be ate up by all he fees. What do you think of this?

I had not heard of this, so I went looking and found a few stories about it. It does seem that banks are considering fees for debit cards, U.S. Bank, being the first. This story: http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/u-s-bank-hints-at-checking-and-debit-card-fees/ predicts that debit cards will no longer be free. Although I doubt the fees will be much, it's disturbing news in that it's just adding to the problem for consumers. I understand that banks are trying to make up for losses, but if things continue this way, they're probably in for yet more losses as people simply cannot keep up.

One woman that was interviewed said that she doesn't like it because the bank is already charging fee's for stuff.Even supposed free checking add's a fee to do this and that, before you know it the charge is more then the institution across the street that has a monthly fee.

Supply and demand. THey need money, people depend on ATM's. I hadn't heard this but seldom use debit cards anyway, but they will only be hurting themselves. What part of "recession" and "double digit unemployment" and "no job" don't they understand!!! If we have no income, we can't pay the bills, so where do they think we will be able to pay yet another bill/fee!!! But, since most have to pay for a checking account, so they have a place to put the money for the debit card so the bank can charge for that....I bet many will go back to paying with a check. 44 cents over a buck or more....big savings there!

Yeah, larger banks are starting to charge at least $10 a month for a service fee on what previously were free checking accounts. THey will waive it if you have an automatic pay check regularly deposited, and if you have $10k as a balance, but other than that....$10. Probably raise it to $20 next year! I just went and closed mine out at Chase...they asked why and I told them and told them it was so much nicer when it was WAMU. She said "well wamu went out of business" I said, "well I'd have more respect for them if they go out of business for doing good things for their customers than have them start charging me fees cause they were busy padding their own pockets. Chase mis spent their money and now want their customers to foot the bill. I'm not going to." She looked at me like a calf looking at a new fence. Oh, my other option for a free account was if I had money in other banking institutions and "brought" it to Chase! I said, "not until you drop the fees."

Oh yeah, forgot....if they do start charging for ATM usage...many will go back to using a check and the USPS (only 44cents instead of a dollar or more!) to pay bills. USPS will love that! I don't use ATM hardly at all. Pay in cash or check.

My local Credit Union isn't charging a fee now for Debit Cards are you sure it isn't Credit Cards that are raising their fees due to the recent changes that they have been forced to make with their issuing and charging of fees for people. Are you talking about the Fee for using non-member ATMs like they normally charge 2.50 or something around their to pull money out because you are not a member of their bank or what ever.

fees on debit cards? I hav e not seen any fees yet in my online B ankof A merica account and I buy on line using my debit card. surely if my bank was doing that they would have sent me a notice. I know that if you use a debit card in some other banks atm machine you will get charged but so far I have not heard from B ank of America.I have a senior account with my bank and its free of charges however they make it up by charging for their checks.Used to be you got free checks and deposit slips and check counters. still get the counters free.

Several years ago, my bank offered a free debit card that supported the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. It was a cool looking card, and it was free, so we got it. The other day, while I was checking my bank statement, I saw 2 deductions for $10.00 each for something called an affinity card. Lo and behold, my free debit card now has a $10.00 annual fee, and I was never told about it. Needless to say, when it's time to renew, I will no longer have an affinity card.

Since they are imposing new laws due to the bank bailouts the banks are trying to recoup the money they lost between the housing market, investments, and a poor economy. I will say the credit union fees overall will be less expensive. But if your fees go up or they start imposing fee's you'll need to do some shopping around for a new financial institution.

Fees on credit cards I can understand but debit cards! It's your money and you are saving the bank time and money. You use the ATM machines instead of bank tellers. In fact you don't even go to the bank most of the time. It's supposed to be a service which benefits both parties. In this part of the world, debit cards are still free but now I am thinking, how much longer?

The particular debit card that I have is not affiliated with a local bank.It has one bank out west.My funds get direct deposited and I pay a $5.95 fee per month for using their service.which makes it very conveient to me because I do not have a car to go to the bank or credit union. I heard this on the news that banks and credit unions already charge a monthly fee,but now they are adding a fee if you use a debit card and limiting how many times you can use it.Plus it already is being used that if you use an ATM not affiliated with your bank or credit union they charge you,but that rate is supposed to be going up to. But,you are exactly right,"it's my money",so why should I have to pay then to use it.
