Hi there! I was just wondering.... Why is the internet called the internet? Any specific logiv or story behind it?? Who actually named it?
Its a slightly complex I think.... What would you name the internet if you had the power to rename it? I would go for something like socialnet or connectnet or connNETion. What about you? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Apart from owlwings specific answer which is pretty much spot on if you are truly interested in the origins of the 'Internet' I suggest you read through this article. It is fairly long but theres some interesting information in it.

The internet originated from a US army or something. inter short for internal
net short for network longer version could be internal network so they shortened it to internet. That would be my guess.

The word comes from the prefix 'inter-' meaning between and 'net', which is short for 'network'. Originally, the Internet (notice that it should always have a capital 'I') was a way of connecting several private networks (originally government networks, later academic networks) in a way that involved several pathways through 'nodes' rather than having any one central controlling point.
The Internet can carry many different kinds of data and each has its own protocol. The one that is used most today is the HyperText Transfer Protocol (which is why a URL begins with 'http://') and it is the linking of web pages using this protocol which makes up the 'World Wide Web'. As a result, the World Wide Web can be thought of as part of the way the Internet is used but the Internet itself is merely the way that things connect one to another.
In my view, there is nothing wrong with the word 'Internet'. It says exactly what it is and doesn't need renaming!
