Those are the words of the fitness guru Jack LaLanne. He said that people take better care of their dog than they do of themselves & in many cases that is true!!! Sadly Jack LaLanne passed away yesterday, January 23, 2011, from Pneumonia. I grew up watching the Jack LaLanne show. Jack created the original exercise & fitness show on television. Most of the young generations don't know that Jack invented almost every piece of exercise equipment that we use today. He believed in taking care of your health & in complete healthy living. Jack was one of the original vegetarians even though he did eat fish about one day a week.
In 1954...at the age of 40...Jack set a world record as he swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, underwater, with 140 pounds of equipment that included two air tanks. Then in 1955 Jack swam handcuffed from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. In 1956 Jack set a world record of 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes on the popular television show You Asked For It. In 1957 Jack swam the Golden Gate channel while towing a 1-1/4 ton cabin cruiser. Due to the swift ocean currents the one-mile swim turned into a 6.5 mile swim. I know I couldn't do that!!! He didn't stop there...In 1958 Jack maneuvered a paddleboard 30 miles nonstop from Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore. The trip took 9.5 hours. 1959...at the age of 45...Jack did 1,000 jumping jacks which he called star jumps followed by 1,000 chin-ups in 1 hour, 22 minutes. That same year The Jack LaLanne Show went nationwide. As you can see, the 50s was the decade of Jack LaLanne!!!
After taking a 15 year break, in 1974...at age of 60...Jack swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf for the second time. Once again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1/2 ton boat. Then at the of 61, Jack duplicated his performance of 21 years earlier, where he once again again swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater and handcuffed, but this time he was shackled and towed a 1/2 ton boat. In 1976, Jack chose to commemorate the "Spirit of '76" as he swam one mile in Long Beach Harbor. He was handcuffed and shackled, and he towed 13 boats (representing the 13 original colonies) containing 76 people. In 1979, Jack towed 65 boats in Lake Ashinoko, near Tokyo, Japan. He was handcuffed and shackled, and the boats were filled with 3-1/4 tons of Louisiana Pacific wood pulp. Of course, Jack didn't stop there...
In 1980, Jack towed 10 boats over one mile in North Miami, Florida. The boats carried 77 people, and he completed this feat in less than one hour. In 1984...at the age of 70... Jack was handcuffed, shackled and fighting strong winds & currents when he towed 70 rowboats, one with several guests, from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary. That was a total of 1 mile. Since that time, Jack has been seen more on television selling his Jack LaLanne Juicer.
I have ALWAYS admired the man who was strong & committed enough to take fitness to the next level!!! Do you remember Jack LaLanne; & if so, what are your memories of Jack???

He was a quite interesting character!!! He believed in physical fitness even before physical fitness was popular!!! I think he was the one who coined the phrase "physical fitness!!! After turning 90, somebody asked him what sexxx was like at his age, He responded that he & his wife had sexxx almost every night....they almost had it on Monday, almost had it on Tuesday, almost had it on Wednesday... He was always making jokes & had a very upbeat personality!!!
