Do you feel online colleges need to have more breaks?

My son is an online college. It isn't work at your own pace like a lot of people think because he has assignments about everyday that are due on certain days of the week. He only has 2 weeks off for Christmas break and the rest of the year he doesn't have any breaks. He even goes to school during the summer. He feels that there should be a rule for online colleges to be off on breaks on the same days at non online colleges because it would be less stressful. People think that since he has less time off that he would graduate sooner. You would think so but he isn't. I don't know if other online colleges have more days off but his doesn't. He goes to University of Phoenix. What do you think about this situation?

Well I think there is difference both style of education but the basic aim is one which is Quality Education. In regular collages you have the opportunity to ask questions to the teacher directly and he answer until you got understand what you are trying to understand. How this requirement should be covered in without Facing questioning teacher, "so they give extra assignments to cover those questions as well which students ask in the regular classes". So I think its fair strategy of online collages.

Thank you for responding to my discussion. Yes, online and regular colleges do have a difference on how they teach. Your right regular college you can ask the teacher questions on how to do something and they can show you or tell you how to do it until you can understand to do it and online college doesn't do that.

I believe that it is normal that he does the online thing the whole time. The truth is you don't have to go to college during summer, the opportunity is there however. In my situation (normal college) you have two options: Take lots of classes during the regular school year and don't take summer school (also can't fail any courses, or else you have to usually retake them over summer) or take it easy and also attend summer school. Ask your son if he could take more classes and have a summer break.

Thank you for responding and giving your advice. He can't have the summers off no matter what. You can't fail classes with online college either or you have to retake them and pay for the retakes your self.

Hi margeryann, I got my first degree at a "regular" college, and then I did a couple of years with an online one. The situation is just about the same here, the online college had a lot more assignments and fewer breaks, but that's because it was adjusted to fit into the schedule of people who are employed. At least that's how it goes here - almost all those who attend an online college are employed full time, that's why they cannot go to a regular college. So, no summer vacations - they're employed around the year anyway, makes sense to keep them occupied in school as well - and the assignments are broken into smaller, but more frequent chunks. In the end, the quality of the education was just about the same, I think.

I have attended Liberty University Online and am now enrolled in CTU. I have never really thought about the need for more breaks. If I got burned out, I would just take a semester off. I didn't do that often, though. The only thing I have had issue with is the work load, especially at LUO. It seemed like half the assignments were just busy work. Then I had someone tell me that these online colleges do assign a good bit more work than does the on-campus professors. The reason being- to compensate for not being in the classroom. What they fail to realize is the reason most attend online is because of their work and family schedules. The enormous workload defeats the purpose of online learning. I will say, though, that this has not been an issue with CTU. It is much conducive for success for a person trying to juggle family, jobs, and education.
