"That he believes our military can do with out" - do you really realize what this means? Part 2 1:50. Men and women that give their lives n a daily basis, what they can do with out. I work for a veterans club, as a little extra, we do "Troop Support" this means, we do fund raising, and people bring in supplies for little extras for our troops. You know, the extras like tooth brushes and tooth paste, deodorant. These men/women that are giving their LIVES for us daily. we have to beg people for these little "benefits". THIS is where we need to make cuts. But welfare and health care for people that didnt think ahead, this is where to spend money.... hhhmmm I am lost

I'm sure if you or I looked over that budget we could find tons of spending they could cut.. and none of it would effect schools, taxes, military, or even welfare and health care! So why is the unnecessary spending the last thing they look into?

I agree and the defense budget is no different. But that these men and women go with out, no. How about stop buying planes they cant use. That would be a great start. But they were built in Pelosis state so she insisted they get purchased. ugh!

I agree, it is the earmarks that are killing us.

Yes many politicians are out for themselves, not us. They want to give money to their organizations and businesses, when that money should be going to us.. our schools, our businesses to create jobs for us, our military who protects us, our programs to help us better our lives (not live on the system, but get back on our feet). If more politicians cared more about us than themselves, the economy wouldn't be nearly as bad and we'd all be slightly more secure and stable.

You do realize we spend some $500 Billion dollars on our Defense so this is a huge part of our spending issues a lot of the $500 Billion is going to R&D and mostly to projects that where started in the Middle of the Cold War. So I think some cuts need to be made and I think a huge one is we need to leave a country in the Middle East and stop Nation Building that should help out the spending quite a bit and then we could make some cuts in other areas.

I agree and I do agree that there is spending to be cut here. but at the peril of our volunteer soldiers, no. Cut the overspending on things like nuts and bolts.

As I have stated before, I come from a military family, my grandfather made a career in the Army, my father served in the National Guard (15 yrs) and the Air Force (10 yrs) when he retired from the service he spent another 15 yrs cival service working for the military. My brother is a retired disabled vet spending his career in the Air Force and the Army. My ex-husband spent 4 yrs in the Marines and my boyfriend was in the Army. Just background as to why I feel so strongly about our military and this country. I think that our current president is a poor excuse for a Commander-in-Chief to the men and women in our armed forces. The people that we rely on the most to protect our country are treated horribly. How can he expect respect from them, when he shows none to them. I can't even go on as this will become uncivil. I will add one more thing (regarding the welfare system) my new favorite quote from Thomas Jefferson: "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." As always just my 2 cents worth!!!

I would hope that when Gates, et al, look over the DoD budget for possible cuts, our soldiers, airmen, sailors, etc. well-being (and their families) wouldn't be in the "crosshairs". DoD can make substantial cuts in the acquisition of some kinds of equipment, aircraft, etc. without putting our men/women in danger on the battlefield. Cuts can also be made by investing in IT on a longer rotation...instead of every three or four years, five. Again, change/cancel/rescind some of the regulations and a hell of a lot of programs can be disbanded. There are literally thousands of things DoD can do without affecting our troops. One, I'd cut the AF budget, such that there weren't extra Colonels and other officers in the AF sitting around to carry briefcases for some of our Congressmen/women. That's something that always bugged the he** out of me...
