Ever since my father has been diagnosed with borderline diabetes, we have been trying to reduce on the sugar in our diet. He is taking sweetening tablets in case he really wants some sweet in his beverages. He doesn't have a sweet tooth - that makes things easier for him. My mother, on the other hand, tends to add sugar in the food she cooks. Now, she uses the artificial sweetner instead of sugar. I keep telling her not to since the idea is to stop the urge of taking anytig sweet and adding sweetners does not solve it. Also, I read some where that the heat kills the effect of the saccharine. Are you aware of the harmful effects of the artificial sweetner? How does it react with heat Or any fact regarding the use of the sweetner?

I don’t use artificial sweeteners except for the fact that I drink a lot of Diet Coke which of course contains tons of the stuff! I have heard that these sweeteners are not great for you but I don’t know in what way. I still treat myself to Diet Coke as fortunately it is my only ‘sin’ aside from coffee so I don’t feel too guilty although I hope artificial sweeteners doesn’t increase the chance of cancer. As far as diabetes goes I don’t see it as something that would aggravate it but a doctor would certainly know best.

I agree with you Paula. I think moderated living prevents a lot of untoward things. Do you drink coffee without sugar?

Even I heard it. May be it aggravates certain conditions in people that are already killing them. I am sorry for your cousin.

I have been a health nut all my life and for my thanks I get to be still working at 77 years of age. I haven't had a medical checkup for over 30 years and I am not addicted to sugar. Years ago I cured myself of the sugar habit by going absolutely sugar free for 3 weeks. Yes that all it takes, just three weeks sugar free and your taste buds forget about sugar. Of course I NEVER eat any artificial sweetener because they are POISON! never, never eat artificial sweeteners, just go sugar free for 3 weeks and you will never crave sweets again.

It can be like trading one evil for another sometimes when your trying to figure out what foods are better or what you need. I know I have read a lot of stuff about artificial sweetners but it has been mainly related to cancer. The truth is that according to doctors...everything causes cancer.

The same thing happened to my father last year. He was not diagnosed with diabetes, but his blood sugar was extremely high and he was told that he could end up a diabetic if he kept his eating habits the same. He drank tea and coffee with sugar daily, as well as having white bread, biscuits and sugary treats throughout most days. My parents have changed their eating habits slightly, but they still consume heaps of dairy and grains, which cause all sorts of other problems. Artificial sweeteners are extremely bad in my opinion. All health experts agree on this fact. They are unnatural chemicals which can cause many side affects. Aspartame which is found in most diet and sugar free soft drinks is well known for causing symptoms very similar to Multiple Sclerosis in many people. If your mother wants to sweeten foods, then dates, stevia, or honey are a better option, but still should be used in moderation.

I can relate to your family story Bill. My parents lived in a time when food, air and life was pure and abundant. My mom still cooks for 6-7 people when we are only 3 at home. However, she never wastes it and feeds the house helps and others. I do not have any problem with it as long as she understands the health benefits of certain items. She has changed a lot over the years and hopefully will STOP the use of sweetners soon. That is a major concern. We never run short of dates. So, it sounds easy and healthy to substitute the sugar with it. i will tell my mom. Thanks bill.

artificial sweeteners always have harmful effects to our human body. I will advise to use natural products because our body will not have any negative chemical reactions. Most of the time artificial products, give negative side effects to the user

That is so true. Artificial sweeteners is not good to our health. It is artificial, in other words, it has nothing to do with health benefits.

It does reduce the calorie and particularly helpful for those who take sugars by substituting with the sweetner.

I eat a more or less sugar-free diet as I don't metabolize sugar very well at all, even fruit sugar can give me problems. I would never use artificial sweeteners as they have some bad reports. I just quit sugar around 20 years ago. At first it was difficult as I was craving it, but I did lose the taste for it, and I am so pleased that I don't have to worry about getting artificial sweeteners. I would feel that I was fooling myself, if I did that.. _Derek

That should be it Derek! I keep asking my mother to stop it altogether since sweeteners still keep the urge going. I, myself, is working on stopping it altogether. But I just have to have little amount of sugar with my tea.

First and foremost, I appreciate this topic of yours that warns us of artificial sweeteners are bad for health. I like to eat sweet food, but I am now trying not eat as much if possible. I eat it only when I am into it. Take care, mimpi.

Anything artificial isn't really good for the body, but i think it is cheaper which is why people still take it. It also tastes more or less the same as sugar..

Artifical sweetners reduces the calories. But it does not have anything to do with the diabetis I feel. Diabetis results in the problem of insulin which converts glucose. So better consult some doctor if you want to use artificial sweetner for your diabetis father

Diabetic people must stop the intake of sugar and since the artificial sweetening agents are not sugar but leaves you with the sweet taste many take that. I will consult the doctor soon.
